I just considered the possibility that Juliet, not Desmond, is meant to merge the timelines. Think about it. Desmond was at the center of the Hatch imploding and gained special powers because of it. Juliet was now at the center of Jughead exploding and seemed to have knowledge of the alternate timeline ("it worked") before she bit it in 2007. Is it possible that there's a Juliet in alterna-2004 who knows whats happening in both timelines and will set out to merge them?

Whoa. Someone over at the AV Club just brought up a good point: since Jack and Co. blew up the Island in 1977 and Widmore was still on the Island at that point, doesn't that mean that Widmore died before Penny was ever conceived and that Desmond and Penny never met in the alternative timeline? What does that mean for Desmond possibly being the person to merge the timelines? If he has knowledge of both timelines and possibly the power to choose which one survives, wouldn't he obviously choose the one in which he and the love of his life can be together?KH FOR OWNER!

Man, it will be crazy if Desmond actually does have to decide which timeline survives. If he chooses the new timeline, everyone on Flight 815 survives, but he'll never see Penny again. If he chooses the original timeline, he gets to be with Penny, but Charlie, Rose, Bernard, Locke and all the other casualties of 815 will be gone. Dude.KH FOR OWNER!

I'm Don Incognito
I swear to god that I read a Don Incognito comment earlier tonight and thought it sounded like you.
edit: Well, it makes more sense now that I look at it again. You made the same comment here.

Denial? Really? Own up to your douchiness; it's not like the rest of us Polytubbies could possibly think less of you.

My favorite characters have alway been Sayid, Hurley, John, Juliet, Sawyer and of the new ones, Miles.
Real John is dead,
Juliet, probably dead until the very end after she's finished shooting 'V' so we won't see her much.
All I can say is thank god they didn't finish off Sayid but if he's not really Sayid, I'm going to be pissed.
And while I'm glad to see Sawyer going back to the bad boy side, I hope they don't go too overboard.
And yes watching with someone that doesn't get it is difficult. My wife has been *****ing about it since the first part of season two. No matter how many "here's what happened before" shows like the summary they showed prior, it just doesn't matter. I mean come on, if I'm forced to what shows like "What not to wear" the least she can do is try to pay attention. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Especially given it was Desmond, the man whose consciousness is known to go on merry jaunts on its own from time to time (figuretively and literally).

I'm also not convinced that it was the nuke that sunk the Island.
Regarding Hurley: he was the one character who appeared to be truly, fundamentally different in the alternate universe. Everyone else was pretty much the same in their fundamentals--Jack the fixer, Sayid the ass-kicker, John the ashamed, Jin the douche, Charlie the junkie, Kate the psychopath, etc. But suddenly, Hurley is the luckiest man on Earth, he has no fear of anyone taking advantage of him because only good things happen to him.
I don't know if this bodes well or ill for original Hurley, but it is very intriguing.
Obviously, I've been wrong many, many times before, but I definitely think there was something very wrong with Des. No one else saw him on the plane, we only saw him interact with Jack, he just appeared out of and disappeared into nowhere... I'll be surprised if alternate 2004 Desmond just happened to be on the plane."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine

My theory:
Jack will have the ultimate choice of choosing either the original timeline or the alternative timeline. The alternative timeline will be better for him but the original timeline will be better for the world (maybe smokey gets to go home and that is bad if the losties never show up on the island). Don't know how Desmond fits into this, maybe he can communicate between timelines or something, showing Jack what his life would be like in the alternative timeline.Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try. -Homer

Yes, out of all the dialog last night his "i'm the luckiest guy in the world" was the most least expected and thereby has to be the most important. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple
