I disagree that it meant the Sideways stuff was a waste of time.
Dude, there was no good narrative reason to spend half a season slowly setting up the awakening of the Castaways in the Sideways waystation. It was pretty emotionally satisfying when they finally woke up, but almost all the time spent on the Sideways world before the finale was redundant drudgery and a pointless "spot the difference" fake out.
I think it's now clear that Darlton simply didn't have enough story left to fill an entire final season and the Sideways world was their means of killing screentime.
It was where everyone finally had to work out their flaws; it was Purgatory.
I don't think it was Purgatory. The Castaways weren't being purified or punished in order to be worthy of moving on; they were just chilling out until they remembered their life and were ready to move on.
Mother****ing Kate being the one to kill nameless?
Jack killed him. Kate just got the assist, like fellow Canadian Steve Nash.

Plus, only Lapidus can pull off quips like the one she attempted.
