Very old joke and I think generally accurate because most people try to play condomless on the back end of the cycle (very difficult to guess right) or try to play far closer into the middle. Also my comment also inquired how badly they "don't want a child"-- We always knew we wanted children someday so for us it was a way to experience more sensual sexuality with an acceptable risk of pregnancy (its not THAT high if you are restrictive and with a woman with a regular cycle). Whenever we 'tried" she got pregant in the first month (freakkin gyp !!!) so the fertility was very much there

I would never recommend any form of the rythym method for anyone for whom pregnancy would be a catastrophic event (heck for them it should be condoms AND pill/shot. But for couples who are simply in the "not quite yet" frame of mind its nice to have 3 days a month of condom-less play to enjoy.
