Based on some reviews I've read, they definitely depart from ST cannon. I'm fine with that, so long as it's fun & I like the characters.
The awfulness of the SW prequels came down to putting (bad) plot and special effects over characterization (not to mention casting).

The problem is that the last 2 TNG movies have sucked. 10 was just plain awful. 9 was more of a "what was that one about again?" sort of boring bad.
Once they screwed up an even-numbered ST movie beyond all repair, it was time to let it go and start over.

Abrams has been pretty clear that he wouldn't be overly concerned with canon. His stuff usually has some plotting, half-decent dialog, and good production values. So I might actually see this one.

That's what happens when you have someone direct who's never watched a single Star Trek episode. X should have been good. And killing Data? They should have done the same thing that the original did, and have adventures with Picard in the Enterprise and Riker in the Titan.
