First contact showed the potential of the new crew was greater then that of TOS.
It's not like TOS set the bar high for thespian skills.

        awesome nerd-trolling!

The mere existence of a new ST property -- yet unseen -- is all it takes. Nice!

First Contact was the best TNG movie, and sadly it sucked.

What can I say. I used to watch TOS and TNG regularly when I was ~12. And it dawned on me even then how many racial stereotypes there were in the show.

Yeah, the movie side of TNG (by far my favorite of the the ST TV franchise) never really took off. Kinda sad; badly fumbled overall.

This is total nonsense. Cardassians = desert. They're the late Ottomans, particularly the branch holding on to Arabia. ****, they had ships called ****ing Janissary class.

                Jerusalem isn't in Arabia.

Ok, the Cardassians could be Turks. You've got words like Gul and whatnot thrown around.

The Arab part makes sense for the sex hangups, but not for the economic-based culture.

Yeah, but their economic dominance is entirely based on single-minded focus over a specific natural resource. A natural resource that commies like the Federation don't care very much about.

That's what made it so fun. And the reliably moral-at-the-end script formula. Hilarious stuff. Watching them migrate from show to show was one of the best parts. I watched TOS starting when I was 13 -- the perfect thing, since I had finished all the sci-fi in the public library. Despite its sophomoric execution, it was different enough for me to embrace. I laugh at it now, but at the time, it was right in my wheelhouse. (Those were innocent times being raised in the suburbs.)

TNG came out around the time I got married, so I was in my mid-30s. Good times!

I misunderstood the intent of your post then. Mea culpa. I guess I was under the impression that you viewed the canon as a straight jacket which it need not be.

This review gives me hope that we may both be satisfied with the finished product though.

I wouldn't go quite that far but it was the only one that was remotely watchable.

DD, I'm pretty sure geek code forbids you from like the ST movie. Your allegiance is to SW.

                          J. J. Abrams

I'm excited for it and will probably go to the theaters to see it. I can't remember the last time I went to the movies. Though, I do have plans to take Josie this weekend to see Aliens vs. Monsters.
