          • I thought there'd be nothing but bored spin and personal assassination attempts against Huckabee when I opened this thread, but watching Ben Kenobi and Oerdin make huge asses out of themselves in this thread has proved to be pretty amusing.

Based on their personal histories, Huckabee and Romney have both proved themselves to be non-corrupt, honest, forward-looking and qualified public office-holders. I'm sure both would have a much better (as in, less colossal errors causing international warfare) foreign policy as a POTUS than your current fiasco of a President has

Nah, I wouldn't be silly enough to argue about Mormonism with a Mormon. I'm Orthodox, so I don't feel too much more comfortable with the "mainstream" Evangelical types. It's a matter of relative nuttiness.

                • Huckabee is hurting everyone, pretty much. He's probably hurting Thompson as much Romney...
He's still between 18-15 percent nationally on the polls. Romney dropped about 10 percent and Huckabee jumped about 10. That tells me that part of Romney's base jumped ship.

                  • False. The exact words are: "We believe the Bible as far as it is translated correctly."
And they believe that there was a Great Apostasy early on in the history of the church, by which the previous translations were corrupted.

The Book of Mormon is meant to be a supplement to the Bible, not its replacement.
Yes, and that bothers evangelicals who take it seriously when anyone adds books to the bible, as a rejection of biblical truths.

I haven't distorted their teachings, but all of these I have heard from evangelical friends as to why they have difficulty with Mormon teachings. That's all. None of these issues come up with Huckabee which is why many are switching away from Huckabee and why Romney is hurt most of all by Huckabee moreso then the other candidates.

                    • Romney certainly didn't drop 10% nationally. That's totally absurd. Seriously dude, you say the most ridiculous things about American politics. Over and over again. How much national support do you think Romney had before Huckabee's surge? Your characterization of Romney's national decline is exactly what happened to Thompson.

Check out this Rasmussen tracking poll for instance.

Huckabee's national rise is correlated with Thompson's national decline.

State polls are a different matter, though. Huckabee's rise in IA is correlated with Romney's decline i(while Huckabee's rise in SC is correlated with Thompson's decline).

The only ones who are saying that Thompson is lazy are the democrats. Really, he won twice in tennessee by 20+ points.

If the worst complaint about Thompson is that he's lazy, well they said the same thing about Coolidge.
Not with February 5th now being jam packed with massive primaries. And even in a marathon, it's hard to win if you get so far behind in the front.

And the only ones saying Obama isn't "black enough" are Republicans. Come on, Ben... you know better than that. The Republicans aren't going to come out and call Thompson lazy, but they sure are happy to push it behind the scenes or in code (remember the Republicans debates right before Thompson jumped in?). Thompson being lazy helps all of them out, because it makes people think he won't work hard to beat the Dem nominee as, say, Guiliani or Romney will.

And yes, in a close race like this, a reputation for being "lazy" is going to hurt. As it already has hurt his numbers (and I assume the by products of that laziness... ie, not as much campaigning.. has hurt).

                          • Wiki is the easiest source for me to call, because I don't care to do a research project into this. Suffice it to say that until you bring a better source it should stand. It is common knowledge among historians of the time as far as I'm concerned, and I've heard it in numerous (historical) contexts in my years.
The problem with wikipedia is that it changes. The source you cited won't be the same as the one that I see. Every factual statement on wikipedia should have a source linked to it, so if it is in fact true, it wouldn't be that hard to see the link that wikipedia included.

I've not heard the argument, so it's unfamiliar to me.

Evangelicals don't like them because they are a different sect of their religion,
No, I've listed the reasons they don't like them. According to evangelicals mormons aren't Christians because they add a whole new book and teachings whereas they believe that scripture is sufficient. They do not consider Mormons Christians.

same as Baptists don't like Catholics; they can get together on not liking this more-different sect. That's not exactly a surprise... the reasons are the same as pretty much any sect disliking another, e.g. "they do things differently".
Baptists and Catholics get along much better then Baptist and Anglicans. Anglicans assert there are many different interpretations and deny that you can obtain truth from scripture which is considered a direct attack on sola scriptura.

As with the Catholics, the main issue is the whole thing with Scripture and Tradition, with Ordination, etc. But with the recent events they have much more in common with each other. Yes there are some books that are different, but the real question I have is why do Baptist use the same list of books that the Lutherans came up with? It really doesn't make any sense.

Anyways, this is just from my experience. I was just trying to explain why evangelicals have misgivings about mormons and the source of their disagreements.

No, the recent bounce for Huckabee has nothing to do with Thompson's numbers. Here's the before and After.

                              • From those numbers it has seemingly nothing to do with Romney's number either (2% points is with in the margin, easily).
