The only way out of this seems to be to have some transparency in the process of hiring,
maybe by having a jury that checks if the departments of human resouces ireally hires according to abilities and not according to race,
by giving each applicant a detailed statement why other were better than himself or by basing the hiring on separate independent tests, for example in assessment centers.

      • Odd Kid, why in your example do you give the black applicants more jobs than their representation in the entire pool of applicants warrants?

I think I might have said that because I couldn't tell if you were talking about AA or something wider in context.

White males are given preferential treatment. That's why they end up on top.

Can you explain what you were saying now?

But the black applicant is just like you. He thinks he is the best person for the job, regardless of the hiring process.

What do you need all that complication for? You see that outcomes are unequal, so there must be some problem. The only plausable solution is to set requirements for hiring those who are underrepresented.

              • I don't know why so many of you are continuing to discuss this with Kid.

Because I don´t know wether this underrepresentation is due to less able applicants of a certain race/gender, or because there were less applicants of a certain race/gender or because there was de factor raccism/genderism at work.

Without knowing this I could very well introduce injustice (enforced quotas) into a field where there was no injustice before (as for example there were just less applicants of a certain race/gender).

Quotas target all companies, even those where people were selected strictly due to abilites. The things I proposed however are only a problem for those companies where there is de facto racism at work

White males do not end up on top just because of preferential treatment. They (and I'm referring mostly to whites here) also end up on top because they go to better schools, are raised in more functional families, etc.

Generally speaking, if you have a white person and a black person with equal genetic potential (whatever the **** that means), the white person will have overall greater ability than the black person because, more than likely, they will have been raised in a better environment.

This is part of the race problem that exists in America today. While racism still exists, in both obvious and subtle forms, the real problem we face is the self-reinforcing cycle where rich people raise children who are better able to become rich, and poor people raise children are more than likely just going to stay poor.

                    • No reason.
That seems like a cavelier response when your asking others to be clear and talking about preferential treatment.

Since you can change the ratio, do you think you should?

                      • How do these quotas work?

I imagine they change from state to state, because race distribution in the USA is not homogenous.

                        • You imagine wrong.

Quotas are lame, so is racism, no matter who it benefits.

                          • What % of blacks must an office have?

                            Are there quotas for hispanics?

                            How does it work?

I agree on them being bad, I am just interested in how they work.

                              http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Racism

Researchers, including Sendhil Mullainathan and Marianne Bertrand, at the MIT and the University of Chicago found in a 2003 study that there was widespread discrimination in the workplace against job applicants whose names were merely perceived as "sounding black". These applicants were 50% less likely than candidates perceived as having "white-sounding names" to receive callbacks for interviews. The researchers view these results as strong evidence of unconscious biases rooted in the United States' long history of discrimination (i.e. Jim Crow laws, etc.)

Yes, and the person raised in the worse environment has less opportunity, because of it.
