Look, we've come to a city where you couldn't even entertain the thought of being addressed in French west of St. Laurent to one where downtown is split 50/50. Sounds like a fair balance to me.

FYI, the English/French proportion on the island has remained steady in the last 20 years. The difference is that French is now represented in a proportion function of its real numbers...

50/50 I only ever get addressed in English when it is somehow obvious that I'm a McGill student.

Your mileage may vary. Somehow, I'm not surprised that someone who thinks the PQ seeks to "eradicate" English would register and file every occurence of French.

In my experience, downtown tends to be French in daytime, because of the workers that commute from the suburbs. Nightlife paints a different picture, mainly because of the McGill and Concordia students.

BTW, interesting anecdote.

When I was in secondary school, the CBC wanted to make a documentary about the teaching of history in Quebec. We had a very good and knowledgeable teacher, who always tried to show both visions of history. When they had taken a lecture on camera, they were so disappointed that they tried to find another school - in Lac-St-Jean. The footage from my school didn't make it to the final cut.

Some of my American friends have trouble with their landlords, but that's to be expected I'd say.

I am deeply offended. The Quebeqois posters here seem quite happy to ignore the relative decline of Montreal compared to Toronto that their anti-English policies have had. I question the wisdom of anyone that is willing to commit economic suicide just so they can have their own country

It's not an issue of being able to survive, it's an issue of the language in which I am addressed. 15 years ago it would have been English, now it's French. Obviously after I begin speaking English back to them they are forced to continue in English. Don't get me wrong, I survived in Provence using my French, I just don't see why in a bilingual country I should be expected to use one language or the other.

I know you guys will argue that the official language of Quebec is French, but that's just part of the attempt to get rid of English speakers in the province. The province has lost 50% of its native English speakers since 1971. Your policies are having a visible effect.

Despite any real rise or decline of fortunes in Montreal, comparing it with Toronto will always feel like a victory for Montreal.
