i'll also have a minor in history, and it must admit that i need to put much less work into those classes than into my major classes. it seems that you can write almost anything as long as your essay has a good structure and some quotes from the course reader and the assigned books and you have at least a b+. you get As if you use big words and your thesis actually seems believable.

I never dropped out of university as an undergraduate. I left a PhD but that I do not regret - I never did really enjoy academia.

Yes. Ben, you live in one of the fastest shrinking regions in the country. It's hardly reflective of Canada as a whole.

Anecdotally, I have a cousin who graduated with an education degree a few years back. She moved to North Vancouver a couple of years ago. She could (and did) turn down her first several offers to substitute each week because she was waiting for the North Van. district to call. Never failed. She also turned down numerous full time offers because she wanted to work in North Van. (she doesn't want to have to commute over the bridges every day). On top of that, she isn't a science teacher, which are in even higher demand.

I'm studying middle east knowledge or whatever it would be called in English in the first year. It's a bachelor grade(3 years). I'm tempted at specializing in history, and perhaps combining with something else. I don't know what I will become yet, but with middle east history one can work for example in media, for the government and different kind of organizations according to the info the uni gave, so I don't think one's without options.

The other thing is the education degree.

The trouble is for majors in their field of study need another 2 years if they want to teach up here.

I have heard that the market is decent in Vancouver, but I don't really want another 2 years of school. I'd like to get out and work some time.

Certainly a reasonable assessment, IMO. Part of my perspective is no doubt based on the market that I'm in. I haven't checked public schoolteachers' salaries around here in some time, but my hunch would be that most public schoolteachers in Arkansas are paid somewhere in the mid- to upper-20s. A few will break into the 30s in school districts with better tax bases.

I haven't checked public schoolteachers' salaries around here in some time, but my hunch would be that most public schoolteachers in Arkansas are paid somewhere in the mid- to upper-20s. A few will break into the 30s in school districts with better tax bases.

The other factor is cost of living. 20k I am sure goes much further in Arkansas then it does in Vancouver. I was surprised by how cheap things were in the US compared to here.

Average payment for a teacher in Norway is around 40k. 20k is like, nothing!

I'm sure it does. But even in Arkansas, 20K just doesn't get you very far.
