Sadly that's true. The Polish seem to have recently adopted traditions of the English fans.
Out and out slander! It's well known that the Dutch invented football hooliganism!

    • In general I think the referees have been OK this tournament, considering the large picture of things and the potential mistakes that actually haven't been made. I've seen all games so far apart from the first half of Italy - Ghana. A few wrongly judged key incidents I come to think of...

Japan - Australia, right after the Australian equaliser there was a clear penalty for Japan that wasn't taken.

France - Switzerland, hand somewhat protruding from player struck by ball, hindering it in its path towards the goal. I would have called it a penalty but maybe the referee made a choice to see it as to involuntary.

Ukrainian sending off today was nothing.
It's candy. Surely there are more important things the NAACP could be boycotting. If the candy were shaped like a burning cross or a black man made of regular chocolate being dragged behind a truck made of white chocolate I could understand the outrage and would share it. - Drosedars

I said I had my fingers crossed, no that I was sure that they had. I don't know enough about the standard of law enforcement in any other countries to make definite statements on this sort of thing, but I can say that the Germans seem to have bene doing very well so far - isolating (and arresting) idiot troublemakers without turning up in force and inciting trouble.

And it was a clear foul by the book. People got yellow cards for less, particularly in this game, like for complaining etc. And rightly so, all referees are instructed to be strict.
They're always instructed to be strict. But every world cup they always make rules (interpretation) changes and it's always a balls-up. This time shirt pulling has become 'persona non grata'. So what happens? If anyone feels a slight tug they fall to the ground and it's a yellow (or a red) for the shirt puller. Thats crap IMO, it just promotes diving.

          • Sorry, but if you actually pull the shirt then that's a foul. No question about it.
If you don't and get a yellow card when they dive then that's just unfortunate, but if they get caught diving then that's their card marked for the rest of the tournament (/their playing career?), and then even when they are fouled the ref might not give it because they have been known to dive in the past.

I'm just hearing about Poles and Germans throwing bottles and chairs at the police. They're not fighting one another, but because the police have been cleaning up by arresting known hooligans to try to prevent trouble.

Good lord , talk about rose-coloured glasses. We know your comments are only in the hope that the stupid burke ref who kept calling Crouch for holding the defenders down will be there TUESDAY AT NINE to try to save your swedish behinds. It wont help though, we will crush you

So the ref can judge the difference between a fair tackle, a hard tackle, a foul, and a yellow card but if I pull your shirt for an instant and you dive I'm booked. Sorry, thats crap.

Divers arent "marked for the rest of the tournament (/their playing career". In some leagues their acting ability is appreciated like a fine play.

Not at a World Cup though.
Anyway, for your first point, pulling the shirt of an opposition player is a foul. Absolutely no question about that, whether they dive or not. Whether a card is given depends on whereabouts on the field it is and whether the pull prevented a goalscoring opportunity or not (definitely red).

                          • Apparently there have been over 200 arrests of German and Polish fans for fighting with the police after tonight's game.

Ecthy - Sir Ralph is, if he's still here.

                            • That pull didn't stop a goal scoring oppertunity IMO, the guy had run out of time/space he was looking for the ground.

                              Spain looked pretty good though.....
