Maybe the German should've gotten yellow for diving, but that doesn't cancel out the foul Sobolewski did make, that should've been yellow either way.

They could score them whenever they please... but not today.

Seriously, I spent 90 minutes watching and cursing, while my wife was yelling "Shajbu!", but no avail.

      • Locutus is right. Even if the German dived, then the foul was clearly premeditated, even if it wasn't properly committed, because the German player dived. It's the intent that got the yellow card.
Furthermore, there was no need to even try to foul him. I mean, he wasn't the last man by a long chalk, and the Germans had failed to capitalise on better opportunities up to that point, so he should have just let the player go, and run back to help his teammates keep them out.

They were barely past midfield and Sobolewski barely touched him. If you look at the play you'll see that the German changed direction sharply from the wing and actually ran right by him. If he had carried on down the sideline Sobolewski probably wouldnt have even caught him. It's not like Sobolewski stuck out his leg or chased him up the field and jumped on his back. You wanna call a foul OK, but the incident did not deserve to bring a team down to 10 men in a close game. I think it decided the game.

The riot police better be ready tonight.
We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

Are you serious? Hard to imagine that a few miscalled offsides would have resulted in TWO goals.

The ref sucked - but not THAT bad.

Sadly that's true. The Polish seem to have recently adopted traditions of the English fans.

                • Certainly not 4-0 badly. Locutus must have had money on a Ukrainian victory.

He didn't get a red. He got a yellow. His bad, that it was the second already, and there can be only one.

And it was a clear foul by the book. People got yellow cards for less, particularly in this game, like for complaining etc. And rightly so, all referees are instructed to be strict.

Well the British and German police have done wonders so far to prevent morons arriving to spoil the fun for everyone else, so I've got my fingers crossed that the Polish police have done their bit too. This World Cup has been so good so far that it really shouldn't be spoiled by a few idiots with an ulterior motive.
Plus, my brother's in Germany at the moment just to join the party.

It is Russian and means puck. The Russians root for their hockey players this way, but sometimes for other (ball-) sports too. You can't tell hockey and football apart with a liter vodka in your stomach.

Good that she doesn't read that. And of course she was joking.

Even if it was 2-1 at half time, without the penalty and red card in the 47th minute it would still have been a very different match.

And no, I have absolutely no stake in the Ukraine, but that was one of the most blatant examples of referee bias (and influence on the course of the match) I've ever seen.

That's because there's no Dutch Uriah Rennie.

Agree on everything else but that's very naive (or rather, ) The Polish don't seem to mind hooliganism, they have no central registry, no coordinated policy, nothing related to preventing it. It could indeed proof to be a long night in Dortmund and not in a good way...
