  • What I'm wondering is what will happen with the old Reform populist policies?

Like parliamentary, senate, and electoral reform. There were a lot of things to like in there, with the exception of screwing around with the courts.

Judges should be appointed at long intervals, they should be professionals not politicians.

Caricatures aside, I think most canadians real fear is that the The Party in Power (in our system) is really becoming indistinguishable no matter who's the leader or party name in This Modern Age...we really do need some serious democratic reform to avoid our government merely becoming a cypher for the will of the rich of the world (err...moreso).

    • Parliamentary reform is still in the policies of the new party, but somewhat watered down.

Elected Senators is about the most radical (nothing about changing distribution). Recall seems to be gone.

More power to MPs, and more power for independent watchdogs are still there. It would be good if they moved oversight of some civil servants (like the Commissioner of the RCMP) back to Parliament from the PMO.

      • They want to screw around with the courts if you consider Parliamentary committees vetting candidates to the SCoC to be screwing around.

        • Why would we care about an elected Senate? It's just a mini House of Lords anyway.

          • Proportional representation
            Doing away with ministerial solidarity
Removing the ethics officer from the reach of the PMO and parliament
Senate reform (depends what reform. Right now i say get rid of it)
SCoC candidate review by parliament / committee.
            What?

            • Ben, where are you getting your data from the last election from? I'd like to know by how much Anita Neville won Winnipeg South Centre. My Brother-in-law tells me that Lloyd Axeworthy was the previous (Liberal) MP and that she's just been riding his coat-tails. There seems to be a lot of lawn signs for the Conservative candidate but I wonder what kind of chance he has.
Thank you joncha, for citing what I would have cited. Election prediction is also the site that helps me get my predictions together, and I think you are right that the Conservatives have a chance to flip the two Winnipeg Liberal seats.

              • I was surprised how many of the non-social policies of the CHP were creative and interesting, although I'd never vote for them.
Think of them as the NDP on the right, except more fiscally sound.

That being said I'll be voting for Chris Kempling who is running in my riding, and let the other conservatives vote for Dick Harris.

                • I haven't read or participated in this thread because I assume it's the same as the major parties - the same old stuff/arguments.

However, after a recent conversation with someone, I thought I should at least let my choice be known, lest anyone think my choice might be something else, and to make my choice public.

My choice is one still being mostly drowned out by the establishment and political inertia, but more and more people are realizing that they only perpetual the cycle of idiocy in government by electing the major parties.

Yes, if you haven't already guessed it by now - I will vote Green. (3rd time now)

No. Given their spot on the Canadian political spectrum, they're more like the Marxist-Leninist party of the right.

                        It's really simple.

You have the Conservatives, and the Liberals, centre right and centre Left

Then you have the NDP who are on the left and the Heritage party on the right.

Ideologically it makes sense, even if there are more leftish voters then those voting for the right.

                        • Or... you have Liberals in the centre, with the NDP centre-left and the Conservatives centre-right. Out on the fringes are the Christian Heritage and the Marxist-Leninists.

No, Ben, it actually makes no sense whatsoever.

So according to your division scheme the CHP magically moved from being a fringe right party to being the NDP of the right the day that the Cons and Reform merged?

                              What an idiotic assertion.

                              • Gee, all we have to do to assign places on the political spectrum is to count parties! It has nothing to do with popular opinion.
