You do not call an entire part of the French population (not only the rioters, but all the youngsters living in the cités) "scum". At least, not when you're the most mediatic politician in the country.

The reason US has no immigrant riots is it has no legal poor immigrants.
What, did I step on somebody's code words?

Do you disagree that most black families have been in the US for many generations?

Besides, there are legal poor people all over the place of all stripes. It's even tough to make an inner city v. suburb distinction.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Let me rephrase: "lack of integration of those people into the polity". There aren't only immigrants or first-generation Frenchmen in there. There are also good oldfashioned gauls. Yet, those gauls can also participate.

Granted, this difference of view might be due to the fact that the US polity is not based on ethnicity/race, whereas it is based on ethnicity/race in most other countries. However, I note that this is my thread.

Thanks for the troll, but I'd like to remind you that France is one of these few countries that are also not based on ethnicity .

Torching cars seems like an activity in which all good french people can participate.

But let's look at who's rioting, not who is available for rioting.

And maybe the listeners aren't either. It doesn't matter. The perception of his speech is what I said. And this is what matters.

On TV, I've heard plenty of people demanding an apology to Sarkozy for his insult. The interviewed people did not riot (at least not avowedly), but "understood" those who did.

Yes, please tell me what I don't know. After all, I'm only living in Paris' suburbs while you're living in Washington.

I thought he was referring specifically to criminal gangs. Does not the image of the Cites as havens of criminality add to the difficulty of combating racism and discrimination? Has not Sarkosy himself been in the forefront of such policies as limited "affirmative action" etc to combat the direct effects of discrimination - it seems that his approach is to both fight discrimination (using unorthodox means) and to fight crime and hooliganism. Im not sure (from what I can gather from the press here) that the hate the rioters have for Sarkosy is shared by all immigrants, and isnt rather resentment at his attacks on the gang dominance of the Cites.

It is indeed good to hear your direct knowledge, and for us to show restraint in judging from far away. But realize Spiff, some of us have had people thousands of miles away from the US patiently explaining to us exactly why Bush was reelected, what the role of fundamentalist Christianity is in our country, how the schools were all teaching creationism, etc.

                        • I don't know as he has direct knowledge. It may be more direct than you and me, but when he plays the "insider" card, it's fair game to question how much he actually knows.

Besides, I didn't even get a "touché" from him.

                          • To be honest, I'm a little underwhelmed at the scale of the rioting and the government's tepid response. This has been going on for over a week, but only one person has died and only 4,000 cars have been torched total.

Think about the amount of money tourists did not leave in France.

I see no discrimanation. They are guests in that country. They must expect to be treated as French. IIRC USA expels immigrants even for minor violations of law.

                              • Let me see, we have a group of people who are rioting because they perceive that the government considers them a lower class of human life.

Let's have our government spokeperson on the whole thing call them "scum".

That will certainly calm things down.

Sort of like "Bring 'em on!", only worse.

DanS- don't know about you, but around these parts, we don't use "those people" in polite company. Its alot like saying "******" or "****ing queer" or "dirty Jew bastard", all things we try not to say in polite company.

But I guess you already told us that linguisitic nuance is not your forté...
