    • I don't think that was ever quite a no-go area for cops though.

      • You got general hostility to anything that reeks of the authorithies in many of those neighbourhoods, as well as a very strong "if you touch one of us, you touch all of us" mentality. If a police car enters, they'll pellet it with stones, if they arrest someone, you risk a fight, and if one of them dies by the hands of the police (real or imaginarily) there's fat chance you'll get riots.

          • Within hours, the original cause of the incidents was forgotten and the issue jelled around a demand by the representatives of the rioters that the French police leave the "occupied territories." By midweek, the riots had spread to three of the provinces neighboring Paris, with a population of 5.5 million.

            • Yeh, Harlem or any American city isn't a good example of a no-go area. The homicide division goes in there all of the time.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Areas of NI during the height of the Troubles (e.g. Free Derry) were no-go areas for the RUC. They didn't have the equipment to deal with such a volatile populace. The British had to send the paratroopers in to restore order, who had the equipment but not the training.

                  • Interesting tidbit...

I wonder how many people total have been convicted.

                    France to deport foreign rioters

Sarkozy said even foreigners with visas would be expelled if convicted

Interior minister Nicolas Sarkozy has ordered the expulsion of all foreigners convicted of taking part in the riots that have swept France for 13 nights.

He told parliament 120 foreigners had been found guilty of involvement and would be deported without delay.

It is not just blindness. It goes back to very old traditions of the Republic. In a multiethnic country such as France, the Republic has always defined its inhabitants by their status as citizens, rather than by their ethnic group (back when it really meant something to be a Breton, an Alsatian, a Flemish etc.).

The Republic made a point at treating the citizens from any ethnical group equally. This is why the "Francification" of the French population succeded, whereas the Russification failed in Russia, or the "Spaniardisation" failed in Spain.

So, the tradition was that, for the Republic to treat every citizen equally, it should not even be aware of the ethnical or religious differences (this also takes its roots in the Rousseauist idea of the general interest, which has strongly affected the French political thought, whereas the Anglo-Saxon tradition thinks more in terms of arbitration between conflicting interests that are equally legitimate).

We now are facing a situation where people are indeed different depending on their ethnical group, because they are having different experiences with a racism that is both extremely common and longlasting (unlike the racism toward the Poles or the Italians immigrants during the thrid Republic, which didn't affect their children born and raised French). So, getting statistical data on them might becoe a good idea.

However, there is the risk it further reinforces a community-building around the cleavages of ethnical group, or of skin color. Especially among whites. This is the last thing we need.

                            • Thought if they are smart, they'll come to Finland. We have a rule, that if you are from Afghanistan, Iraq or Somalia, you get automatical temporary permit to stay. This is to say, it is by default, and it's the rule. Thus you WON'T be turned away no matter what. Now, if you are so unfortunate as to be some other origin, tear up the papers before you get in. In here, they'll give you new identity, and they get the information to it.. from YOU!

They just expressed there worries that this could be easily used for terrorism, as there are cases with people changing their identity after the initial one, meaning they have TWO DIFFERENT OFFICIAL IDs.. Cool **** hey? All you have to do is to be rude as hell, so that the clerk doesn't have the balls to do anything else but grant your wishes for new ID .

It was in the papers few days ago, because they themselves got worried for these rules and that they have given DLs to people. Who could be terrorists. Now lost in the process, and with a new start!

So they should come to here, claim they are say.. Iraqi, or what ever, be loud as hell, and they'll get EVERYTHING, including more money and support than unemployed or anyone else.

                              God bless the righteous Finland.

yeah, but la république also enforced parisian french on the rest of the country to wipe out breton, alsacian, savoyard and provinçal as languages. they impossed their will over the others. frenchification worked because they eliminated all language differences by force. that did not happen in spain or russia or la conféderation non plus for that matter or in belgium, or in canada.

if you dont think that there was conflict the last time these large groups were frenchified, then youre wrong. and im sure this round of frenchification will be just as brutual and hard on everyone.
