The use of the term "immigrant riots" was a mistake, that caused silly quibbling over terms. Immigration related riots would be better, or ethnic riots, though that might imply riots between two groups, rather than versus the state. While there is certainly a large social component, I dont think you could simply call these poor or working class riots, could you? (Myself, I would have simply titled it Paris is Burning, or something like that)

Note also the failure to assimilate into mainstream culture does NOT mean the youths are still part of the culture of their country of origin, as apparently they are not.
It'd probably be most accurate to describe them as a French subculture. Like hippies, but not as cute.

    • why did the french and other europeans countries let so many muslims in?

It is obvious assimilation is impossible because christians and modern secular/atheists/agnostics will not intermarry with muslims.

you will have always 2 different ethnic groups.

It's a conspiracy between capitalism and socialism.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

        • Can't really go "Ooh you're a Muslim aren't you? We're not letting you in!!!" without being, well, racist, bigoted and far right wing.

          • A quarter of young French 'Muslims' are atheists anyway. Or so I heard.

Nothing prohibits Christians from marrying Muslims. There are, however, old prohibitions on Muslim women marrying non-Muslim men. Conversion by Muslims is also extremely frowned upon, if not forbidden outright.

Hmmm. The hippies were largely the children of mainstream (more or less) American families. When children of immigrants go directly from families with a foreign culture, to a counterculture, im not sure its correct to call that counterculture a subculture - and while the subculture is expressed in French, Im not sure that much of the content of that subculture isnt foreign (and i mean american ghetto rap culture, more than mideastern culture)

That may be true for the american hippies, but I seriously doubt that it's true for european hippies, and there was actually quite a lot of them back in the 60'es and 70'es here in europe

You know the score, Winston. Don't try starting a trade of denigration/insults with me unless you're prepared for a long and turbulent ride with someone who'll thoroughly enjoy it.

It's a very simple rule. You answer straight questions without showboating and you might get treated with respect. Take a poke, and I'll just come back harder.

I have to say that getting rid of some of the ghost visions regarding other people that seem to be lingering in your tiny little head would seem like a better use of your time.
Trust me on this point- I had a lovely little comeback to this that was both cruel and deeply personal, but I'm going to let it pass. Instead, consider this. Do you think that the reason why you're failing to persuade me of your universal niceness is that fact that you tend to fail to portray yourself as such?

                        • Sorry, I could never trust a guy with your miserable record, Lazarus and the Gimp.

And frankly you're just too much of a piece of shlt to be worth any more of my time.

I suggest you move on to bltching about how everybody overlooks your stellar intellect, interspersed with the occasional punching in the face of people round your neighbourhood.

I think it has more to do with you being an ass. Clearly the fact that you haven't smoked in six weeks is having an effect...

Sigh. Gosh - hippies were largely the children of mainstream families of the culture of their particular country - does that help? Actually I dont know, WERE European hippies children of mainstream families, esp middle and upper middle class ones, as US hippies were? I know next to nothing about European hippies - (so little I forgot they existed) can you "enlighten" me?
