Obviously we would have prefered that he loose by a clear majority. However our priority is that the oil in Venezuala keep flowing which will be hampered if there is violence in the country.

Aparently proof that the US Republican party has a Euro branch and that you refuse to deal with posts from earlier in this thread.

No, the Repugs are the party of the rich man. The Democrats are the other party of the rich man. The Dem's claim to be populist based on economic policy. The Repugs claim to be populist based on pandering to religion. Both parties are FoS.

            • In relative measure, the majority of Americans are rich people, considering that some 70% of households own their own homes.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Your posts are refreshing sometimes. So many conservatives try to BS all the time.

                      • I'd guess that approx. 3 % of the posters in this thread have enough knowledge about the situation in Venzuela to have an independent and comprehensive point of view. Instead people just drag it into their everyday political reference points and their opinions about the current US administration.

I can honestly say that I do not know enough about the country to say that Chavez is good for them. All I can say is that there doesn't really seem to be an alternative that will bring anything good to the masses. Furthermore, they had a referendum, and he won. That's democracy for you. Even if they made the wrong choice, they made that choice themselves. If anyone thinks that what right and democratic is anything that benefits american oil interests you should seriously seek professional help.

                        • Krop, the Economist estimates that the average Venezuelan income has dropped by 25% since Chavez came in, about the magnitude of our Great Depression. I don't have any compunction about projecting my views on this situation.

                            • The problem with that is that the opposition has had an immense hand in that drop- Chavez has instituted mayor political changes but not drastic economic changes. Increasding government control of the oil production was his big mayor move, but increased oil prices have been a big boon.

As for the opposition-they have repeatedly called for massive strikes, work stopages and so forth- this is bound to affect the economy adversely. From day one they have sought to undermine Chavez. I am sure investor confidence is shaken by his leftist ideas and cuban connections, but the sad part is he has still done more for the very poor than the people he beat last time.
