It was irrelevent, because the Gore team only asked for undercounts to be recounted. Anyway those were counted was going to give Bush a victory.

I hadn't completely thought it through. If it were a tie (how?), then Congress gets to step in and it goes easily to gore, based on the number of red states.

I was thinking along the lines of the Congress refusing to certifiy Florida if the recount went to Gore, but that would still have left Gore with a victory.

The decision should have been Congresses', as the Constitution mandates. That Republicans and democrats in the shouse would have had to face the music and the duties they swore to carry out should not be a concern-the worse that could have happened? The voters sack the whole bunch of them come Nov 2002 (though there is still 9/11 in between)

Yes, lets continue to wallow around in unending regurgitation of the trivial details of hanging chads, absentee ballots, unsubstantiated claims made by minorities, and MrFunisms while the question of who should be allowed to vote remains unanswered. Compared to the tens of millions of votes cast nationwide by incompetent (and in some cases incontinent) voters, 25,000 or 250,000 questionable votes are meaningless.

It isnt as if we dont regulate the right to vote. Age and other restrictions already apply. Why not have a registration test? Why is it you have to pass a test in order to operate a car but in order to elect the most powerful man in the world you dont even have to prove you are sentient?

Because once upon a time such tests were used to prevent people with a certain color skin from voting. That's unfortunate, because I would like to see some basic voting requirements such as you outlined. But it isn't going to happen given the past history of these things.

Thank you for bringing this back on track, though where you went from there was a little odd.

This is about Florida basically saying, "proove you have a right to vote." What happened to asumption of innosence? What happened to due process?

In other news, a Federal court through out a lawsuit that would have required touch screen systems to produce a paper trail. The judge said that while a similar suit is pending in Florida courts, he hasn't jurisdiction. I don't see why not. The right to vote is a Constitutional matter. If SCOTUS can ursurp a case while its in state court, why can't a lower Federal court?
