Religious observance is low among French Christians. We have very few people who still observe days like the All-Saints (1st November), or Mary's Assumption (15th August) for their religious values. Heck, even big religious moments such as Easter and Christmas are hardly religiously observed anymore.

In French schools, we have about 2 weeks vacations every 8 weeks (that is a 6 weeks work - 2 weeks vac sequence). It is very easy to have these vacations encompass religious holidays. For example, there is no reason that Spring vacation gets called "easter vacation", just as there is no reason the November vacation gets called the "All-Saints vacation". Especially with WW1 armistice (Nov. 11) so near.

            • Spiffor, do you think that this ban of religious symbols was motivated by the outbreak of anti-muslim and anti-semitic attacks in France, or is it just secularism run amok?

              • Secularism run amok without a doubt. (More precisely, the questioning of the "secularism at school" old dogma).

The whole affair began in previous summer, as two teenage girls came headscarved at School and adamantly refused to remove their scarves (as already decided by previous laws). Interesting factoid: the father of these two sisters was a middle class Jewish atheist, while their mother was a Berber catholic

Since then, there was a real hystery about this extremely benign problem (very, very few girls keep their headscarves at school), and it hasn't stopped till yet. The hystery comes from the fact we are so attached to our dogma of secularism at school, and to the fear the Muslims reintroduce religion in politics (like these fricking catholics in the past), that we didn't try to think about what the real meaning of secularism is.

                • Heard an interesting blurb on the radio today. Some school boards in Canada may be considering copying the French edict re religious garb and symbols in schools. I have not found a written source yet, but I will look for one.

Personally, I think they'd get trashed pretty fast. We have adapted the uniform of the Mounties to accomodate Sikhs after all. Also, Canadian courts are very much focused on individual freedoms and we have no compelling issue of religious strife to point to historically to justify such a ban.

Also there's the little fact that Catholic education is a constitutional right. Curiously in our case, that is due to the French fact.

But I heard the Ministy of the Inteior told him to shut up about that as they donot want to enforce than dumbass law which can lead to fighting. There is than sect of India Muslim that grow beard which they trim but never cut off and grow hair on their head which they never cut off and wear turban on they head and they will attack anyone who try to cut off they beard.

                          • Sikhs are not an offshoot of Muslims, they believe in one God, but do not call him Allah. They reject many of the tenets of Islam, because they believe them to be useless.

                            • They have absolutely zilch to do with Islam. I do not know where you get your information from but I'd check them again if i were. This is a good site about sikhism: http://www.sikhnet.com/s/SikhIntro .

If anything the main tenets are not disimilar to Buddhism.
