Did people actually have "school spirit" (well, as in cheering for the school and its teams and homecoming and such, as opposed to being proud to be there cademically and acting superior towards Bronx and Brooklyn want-to be's?)

well after co-education and well before move. Though it was pretty clear a new campus was needed.
I'd say school spirit, - lots of pride in who and what we were - but not much attendenance at athletic events. Though plenty of participation. Also enthusiastic math, chess, and debate teams of course. And a great model UN delegation. And more student-run magazines then you could shake a stick at. (And this was back before PC's so putting together a magazine was no trivial task) And a very politicized student council that led an (unsuccesful) student strike."A person cannot approach the divine by reaching beyond the human.
