I disagree; if we ask for a metal as a favour and then go back asking for Horses in 4t, I think we have basically zero chance of getting them. Our military plan right now seems to hinge on horse archers for counter-attack/flanking - thus Horses are our key resource, not metal. We should trade for their Copper and then prostrate ourselves for the Horses if needed.
But I do agree that we need to make our play soon, and the consensus seems to be to use our (perceived) favour for Copper. So I can live with that.

So thats 3 in favor of the trade (wine - metal) and 2 in favor of trying to get the metal gifted.
Unless someone else voices his opinion I am going to sent them essage to PAL soon and offer the trade in-game.
Unfortunately PAL has already finished their turn.
Lets hope this will work how despite that.

How about this:
Hi PAL,
Firstly, we're pleased to say that HBR will be complete on T116.
Secondly, recent aggressive actions from Imperio has seen our sole resource of metal being sabotaged. As you know we were expecting and preparing for an attack by Imperio. However, the loss of copper sets us back somewhat. We would like to change our proposed trade offers and kindly ask you to trade us metal for our wine for the next 10 turns from T113 onward.
We hope we can count on your support in our struggle to fend off Imperio's increasing aggression.
Cheers,
Team RB

Gmail let's you thread conversations, so the email to PAL can be found in the 'tech trade?' conversation in our inbox. As expected, this one's gone to the committee:
Hi Cres,
Our copper was sabotaged by an Imperio spy
Thanks for the info about Banana. The warrior's already moved this turn, so we'll meet them next turn I suppose.
Cheers,
Swiss

Hello Realms,
I posted your message in the PAL forums. We have one copper and zero iron. We don't know where Rabbit's metal is yet.
So has a war actually started over there or was it a culture bomb that took your metal or what?
Note: The banana galley is 2,1 from your warrior. So if you move your warrior 2, into the forest, you will meet banana!

email from PAL ...
Hi Swiss,
The PAL Field Marshall vetoed a trade of our only metal this turn. He is saying we wait until next turn at least and suggested making catapults.
PAL is still in military production mode. Rabbits seem to have taken control of their civ again so we aren't fighting AI.
We know banana has at least iron, so when you meet them...
PAL will reconsider giving you our copper next turn.

I kept the tone friendly for now, as it looks like we have a good shot at securing Iron from Banana, and we don't want to get allHi Cres,
Thanks for the quick feedback. I assume your Field Marshall is referring to PAL switching to catapult production next turn: it's kinda tricky for us to train them without Construction!
Cheers,
Swiss
with PAL just yet, in case we need horses instead come T117.

The next message should include:
Basically, there is nothing to do for that lone warrior. Now that you have gained such a huge military advantage on the Rabbits and they are clearly not a threat to your territory anymore, will you allow our warrior to pass through your land southwards?
FYI: Imperio is fielding War Elephants in big numbers. With the Metal Casting (Templars) and Feudalism embargo against us, we are facing a possible crisis ahead.
Interestingly we met a Banana warrior, which means Banana galley and not workboat as indicated (iirc). If they think they can sail around the north of their continent , they are in for a surprise.
Lets them know that they are responsible for our headaches with Imperio. Damn Ivory trades.
