  • The Roman Kingdom (Latin: Regnum Romanum) was the monarchical government of the city of Rome and its territories

Every reference to kings even elected ones is part of a monarchy.

So technically should wait till that tech discovered before labelling as such

    • i think it dont matter what you call your leader or leaders. just play the f&@#ing game and worry bout your own civ.

      • I was simply referring to civics, ie hereditary rule.

In my case I am running a Despotism, which is how Wang Geon came to power (he simply killed the Warlord who ran Seoul and now refers to himself as Supreme King).

The story I am using is a take off of something that actually occured in Korea.

By the way according to the dictionary a King is a male sovereign or monarch; a man who holds by life tenure, and usually by hereditary right, the chief authority over a country and people.

Further according to the same dictionary a Monarch IS necessarily hereditary, therefore I would say that the term King doesn't HAVE to be hereditary therefore not a Monarch.

A sovereign, using the same dictionary again a sovereign simply has to have control or authority without qualification of a lineage.

But this is all pointless anyway.

EDIT: Original post was a little harsh.

The room was full of Raz followers. The old ways were not accpete in this place.

The now old Prince stood and greeted the room

My fellow beleivers. Oldonia is about to engage in a terrible war with the Japanese, we must not let this tradegy engulf us. We must make our own destiny for this part of Razolia. Cheers filled the room

I have contacts in the other tribes to the east. I will ask them to lobby their leaders to aid us in freeing ourselves from the Oldonian armys power. With support we can free out brothers to the west

          The room erupted once again.

          • To: Chief Tarhe of the Wyandot
From: Tullus Hostilius, King of Rome

Kings Numa's word is still law in Rome, in any case we would never dream of going back on a deal on such short notice. We are pleased that we have come to a mutually beneficial arrangement. Let the border stones be set accordingly!

Rome now knows it rightfully considers Wyandot a friend and beacon of light in a dark world of barbarians. Should your people find themselves in dire need of aid against the barbarians Rome would be more than willing to help you by sending a legion or two to your lands.

Concerns in the east prevent us from immediately settling on the indicated site, but once we do we invite you to consider a joint effort to build a road to Mound city in such a way trade would be possible. This would surely benefit both of us.

In the end we offer to send teachers to spread the use of the Roman Alphabet. Are the people of Wyandot interested in such knowledge? If so, what can you in return teach our own people?

May both our futures be bright.

From: Tullus Hostilius, King of Rome

We patiently await the more detailed border proposal our predecessor spoke of to you. How much of the Nile valley do you plan on settling? If I read previous communication correctly you intend on settling one city. Am I correct in this assumption?

We would encourage you to respond. Also words are easily misunderstood, the same can not be said of maps (unless you are Ozzy's sub ), that is why we kindly ask you to send us a map which clearly shows you border proposal.

                • Barbarians near Neapolis!

A screaming hoard of unwashed barbarian axemen is approaching Neapolis!

The city's garrison is hopelessly outdated, the vast Roman Empire has in the past century found it harder and harder to pay its increasing army, and has so resorted to warriors defending unimportant cities.

                  Rome in 800BC

The nearest legion is in Rome, King Hostilius has ordered that it march immediately. But not before he oversees the executing the traitors responsible for such a lack of judgment. The new king has proven to be rather paranoid and tyrannical towards his own people... there are already rumblings of discontent in the Senate... only time will tell if Rome is to fall into civil war again or if Hostilius's actions are justified.

                  • OOC post about why my leader is an Emperor or Empress

First of all, why didn't i wait for the discovery of monarchy ?

Simple question, not easy to answer. But it has much to do with the game mechanics. Despotism and monarchy are both government civics in the game. For me this means, that it refers to the administrative organisation of my civ. Therefore, i will have to write a story about greater changes in the political structure when/if i will/may adopt monarchy. The current situation, of a single person ruling my civ without further legetimation and without well organised administrative institutions fits very well my understanding of what a despot is. The imperial title however, still needs to be justified.

                    Why call him/her Emperor / Empress ?

I have taken into account multiple factors.

                    - The easiest beeing that, just as Holy Roman Empire, my civ is called Piercian Empire.

                    - A King is, as far as i have learned that in university, a ruler that has to lead his subjects to safety, may it be military, spiritual or even economic safety. The "mission" of a King is always centered on a single ethnical group, such as the francs, the english, the egyptians, etc. The King as to serve his own people by giving them leadership. This is not what my leaders are there for.

                    - An Emperor, according to the same professor, is basicly the same thing. But there is a major difference. The "mission" of an Emperor, is universal. All ethnic groups are meant to become a part of the Empire, and there is (or should not be) a preference for any ethnical group within the Empire. The unifying aspect of shared culture at it's finest. So that is what my leaders "are there for". So even if there are no administrative institutions allowing my leader to rule the state in a well organized way, he/she can still call himself an Emperor/Empress as long as he pursues the greater good for all ethnical groups, not only the Piercians.

                    - And btw, it just sounds cooler.

I hope you enjoyed my little explanation here.

From: Empress Iris of the Piercian Empire

                      Warning !

Our archeresses initially sent to help you have spotted a regiment of barbarian axemen three squares in the South-East of Mound City. They will try to push them back but are currently in the middle of a badly defendable desert.

We have ordered our Prince's regiment of axemen to intercept them, but he still is over four squares away.

Our prayers are with the people of Mound City.

                        Re: Border Agreements

The Metalheads are displeased with the Khmer for settling further north than we had last proposed. Though we recognize our lack of responses due to our extensive domestic duties have caused such a miscommunication. Therefore we will agree to not mercilessly sack your cities due to this infringement.

However if any Khmer settle further north along the desert peninsula there will be war. That land is exclusively reserved for Metalhead uses. We will settle there when we please and will not be rushed by you or anyone else.

We will be happy to provide the workboat when the time comes, but there are no immediate plans to build along those lakes. When it happens, the workboat will be happily supplied. We will happily provide information on the Church of Metal as well (Hinduism in your language).

                        • The Hovel Report

It has been many years that our scribes have seen fit or had the time to post an update on the progress of America. All our resources have been spent working in the fields to feed our growing population. Those not in the fields are in the city working on the construction of a beautiful temple that the world will rejoice in it's beauty.

Our chariots and warriors have ventured far to the east to clear the land of barbarians and wild animals - which there are many. Our cities are in mourning from the loss of two brave warrior bands that were attacked by a pride of lions and barbarian hordes. At this very moment the citizens of New York have taken refuge in the city as barbarians inhabit the village outside the gates. Roosevelt has dispatched a contingent of Archers to route the unwashed mass from the village.

It is also sorry to relay that the town whore from Washington ... Wendy ... died during the barbarian raids. She ran out to greet the invaders in earnest but they did not like the cut of her sagging loins and their leader slaid her with one swift cross of their blade ... that decapitated her. Her head was placed on the end of a stick which was rammed her length from her pleasure opening to the stump of neck, where it protruded while squirting blood. The stick was then rammed into the banks of the river to taunt the citizens of New York. Her body now upside down and her head grinning oddly from between her legs. This was a fate that no one wished upon her.

[[ picture edited due to graphic nature ]]

It is hoped the archers will provide the needed relief from the barbarians in short order and Wendy's grotesque image can be taken down. May she rest in piece.
