    Love Conquers-Part ?

The Love Conquers thread seems to have vanished (was it getting too long?), so I've started a new thread.

Turn 225 to Tomas de Torquemada

Citizens of Greece are ecstatic to have rid themselves of the hated Ecotopia!!

Cities that were in danger of going Barbarian (even with numerous entertainers) are now showing happiness in the 80's with no entertainers!

It appears that the bug has been beaten...at least for now...

But Greece is again in Anarchy as we strive to reclaim our former government that was wrenched from us so unexpectedly. This means that our production still suffers, as does our game score, which has shown a marked decline since the start of our misfortune.

Still, all vital operations are still in very good shape!

    Xenophon...leader of the oh-so-happy anarchists

...and with today's return of our beloved Technocracy, Greek citizens are beside themselves with happiness!

In celebration, residents of Torquemadaville have thrown another Giant Squid on the barbie!

Greece requests that Spain remove their Destroyer from the volcano in Sushiville.

Aside from distressing the local squid, you take serious risks with the lives of your men, as this is an active volcano , prone to erupt frequently!

Once the Destroyer has passsed our city limits, we will likewise depart from the charming hamlet of Aqua Negro!

PS. Thanks for the link, Keygen! For some reason I couldn't find the old thread anymore.

    The utter bare-faced cheek!!!

    That Destroyer will NOT move!

That destroyer has been in place since BEFORE Sushiville even came into existence! Greece is invading the ocean rift zone which has been under Spanish administration - she has been spreading like a plague throughout this area for years!

    Well NO MORE!

That destroyer will not move from it's own territory, Greece has to remove her Plasma Destroyer from it's illegal occupation of Agua Negro's Fisheries AND any subsequent cities built in Spains Rift area WILL BE DESTROYED!

Madrid's allegations of Spanish administration of the undersea rift is ludicrous in light of the fact that until recently Spain's feeble technology made them unable to even visit the rift, but instead were confined to bobbing far above it in primitive vessels.

Greece on the other hand has been building underwater settlers for many years, and has a legitimate claim to all undersea territory she has reached and claimed first.

The fact that a Spanish ship has sailed over this region does not mean that Spain's had ever actually reached the ocean's floor and claimed land. The ocean's bottom along the rift was empty and unclaimed when Greek sea settlers reached it.

Greece had been hopeful that Spain would honour international law, but clearly Madrid is trying to provoke Athens , although our wrath is something you would be wise to avoid.

Still, this rift is but a trifle to Greece, as we have bigger fish to fry at the present time (and we're not talking about those giant squids!).

Join us in a reasonable solution to these frictions. Remove your Destroyer and we will move our Plasma Cruiser, and we can both return to a peaceful if delicate coexistence.

And speaking of our Plasma Cruiser, it's Captain reported seeing only a motley assortment of floating wooden boards at this location, so Greece does not understand Spain's allegation that she is on a fishery.

Spain is disappointed that instead of trying to diffuse the situation, Greece has seen fit to increase tensions by hurling petty insults!

Greece on the other hand has been building underwater settlers for many years, and has a legitimate claim to all undersea territory she has reached and claimed first.
Spain has no problems with Greece building her underwater cities - just as long as she sticks to building them in her own backyard!!!

The fact that a Spanish ship has sailed over this region does not mean that Spain's had ever actually reached the ocean's floor and claimed land. The ocean's bottom along the rift was empty and unclaimed when Greek sea settlers reached it.
That the territory is unoccupied does not mean that it is unclaimed! Claiming the land above means claiming the land below - that is why international fishing rights are upheld as the fish swim underneath the surface! It is also why Oil Rigs, whilst on the surface, drill throught the ocean's floor!

Greece had been hopeful that Spain would honour international law, but clearly Madrid is trying to provoke Athens , although our wrath is something you would be wise to avoid.
Spain cannot be held to ransom by Greek interpretation of 'international law' and finds it rich that Greece talks of Spanish 'provocation', which she has been crawling all over Spanish territory like an unsightly rash!

Join us in a reasonable solution to these frictions. Remove your Destroyer and we will move our Plasma Cruiser, and we can both return to a peaceful if delicate coexistence.
Spain has joined Greece in a reasonable solution to these frictions by 'removing' Greece's Plasma Destroyer and reclaiming her Fisheries. All other incursions on Greek owned resources by Spanish forces in protest of Greece's illegal trespass have withdrawn...

And speaking of our Plasma Cruiser, it's Captain reported seeing only a motley assortment of floating wooden boards at this location, so Greece does not understand Spain's allegation that she is on a fishery.
Indeed, your Captain will have a closer look as he passes it on his way to the bottom of the ocean - think of this as Spain allowing a free Greek 'colonisation' of the ocean floor...

Naturally any aggression on Greece's part will result in the confiscation and destruction Greece's three illegal settlements of the Ocean Rift's 'West Bank'.

Spain hopes that Greece realises that her bluff has been called and has the good sense to make nothing more of the situation. A peace treaty has been offered and a diplomat will be along presently to resume diplomatic relations...

In spite of recent transgressions, Greece is willing to make peace with Spain, as we place very little import on undersea settlements, being focused on far more weighty matters.

Therefore, we have signed the proposed peace treaty.

However, we have billed Spain for the replacement cost of one (1) Plasma Cruiser, as our Captain has verified that it was indeed destroyed by those in the employ of Madrid.

We request payment in gold, as frankly we have no interest in currency of Spanish origin (particularly in light of the upcoming new world-wide currency).

We look forward to hearing from Spain as to how the bullion shall be delivered to Greece.

Spain appears to have lost the invoice for (1) Plasma Destroyer - it could be that it was accidentally filed in the bin labelled 'TRASH'...

Greece requests that Spain honour their recent agreement by removing a Destroyer currently under their control from Sushiville's undersea mine.

As for Madrid's misplacement of our bill for the Plasma Destroyer, Athens is willing to chalk this up to sloppy management, and trusts that payment will soon be made. Athens will not ask again...

But Greece is confident that reimbursement will be made...and rather soon, at that!

Greece continues under the delusion that Spain is happy to continue to allow the encroachment of Greece onto the Greater Iberian Rift Economic Development Zone (GIREDZ).

This is an utter fabrication on the part of the Greeks!

Spain has already taken the unequivocal stance of stating that that Destroyer will not be moving from a position that it has held since before Sushiville was even built!

Spain understands what happened over this disputed invoice. Spain's CFO treated it with such derision that he did not even bother bringing it to the attention of the Political Wing. Apparently we cannot pay a compensation of only one gold and therefore choose to pay nothing!

But Greece is confident that reimbursement will be made...and rather soon, at that!
If Greece decides to take this further, then so be it! Spain has been more than patient in dealing with Greek transgressions - indeed it would seem that a growing faction of hawks is intent on exploiting this perceived weakness!

Greece would do well to remember Spain's threat concerning the further settlement of GIREDZ by Greek interests - it would mean the occupation of ALL Greek settlements in this area, which might in turn either appease or inflame the passions of Spanish Hawks!

Turn 235 (final turn) to Tomas de Torquemada

Greece announces the completion of our Alien Life Project!

Today we welcome all the world's nations into our family. All mankind can now enjoy the high standard of living previously achieved only by citizens of Greece!

Only two other governments have managed to survive through the long turbulent eons of this planet's history. These governments will, of course be dissolved, as we create a new one-world government.

Tomas de Torquemada will be free to live as he chooses once he has paid off the replacement cost of one (1) Plasma Destroyer sunk of the Great Rift. To this end, he has been given a job on the Greek shrimp-boat "Endeavour".

By-the-way, has anyone seen the alien? It appears that it has broken free of it's containment tank and disappeared!!

    (see previous post)

Guys, thank-you for a very enjoyable game. Over two years of twists and intrigues!

So many thanks to Mobius (Spain), who stayed for the entire game, as well as to Keygen (Wales), Birdman (France), Saddam (Inca), Hexagonian (1st ruler of Inca), Demosthenes (1st ruler of Wales), Stavros (Australia), Quinns (Inca), Thor (Inca) and all the short-term subs, not to mention St. Jon (1st ruler of France), who started the game!

And thank-you to the AI and Barbarians, who supplied useful slaves!

Congrats to Rick who beat me to the punch on the Alien Life Project!

It was all I could do to keep my military under tight reign with many generals advocating an all out attack, with a detailed plan in place...

Luckily however, I am a benevolent ruler who keeps his word...

    Thanks, Mobius!

I know all about having to constrain generals, as I too had to stay the hand of some in my military who are less honourable than myself! Many times they pointed out the advantages of Greece attacking Spain, rather than depending on what they referred to as our "wimpy pinko scientists" to build the alien!

But we both had to play under the constraints that we'd agreed to. In fact, I trusted you so much that I pretty much stopped building a military during the last 30 or so turns of the game, putting cities on PW production, instead. If I hadn't, I could have had the equivalent of something like an extra 100 fusion tanks to play with (not that I'd have built such a simplistic miltary!)

I'm glad my trust was so well-placed!

You can both be glad, that St. Jon wasn't in that game at this late stage. He had no doubt backstabbed your both without regret.

I know that for sure as I have been dealing with him "using the dark side of the force" in the DC game.

He.l, we tried (and had a good deal of success) to lye and cheat all the others in the game. Actually I say, we did a fine job .

We tried the same in LungFast. Unfortunately Lung knew him too well and eliminated him early in the game.

I'm sure you're right that Jon would have attempted a bit of a backstab!

But as Jon himself pointed out, one's reputation in these games follows one around, so knowing that Jon had used those sort of strategies in past games, I was fully expecting him to do the same in Love Conquers! And I acted accordingly.

In fact, I was disappointed to see him leave the game without first unleashing some truly nefarious plot!

LOL, that was absolutely guaranteed!!! The one constant about Jon’s strategies was that you KNEW you were going to be backstabbed in any game you played against him. Even as an ally, your back was liable to become akin to a kitchen knife block…

I know this from the inside as he asked me to sub him in the Semi Acc game and set in motion a backstab on Demos who was his ally at the time – I think an added dimension to his deviousness was that he thought that Demos wouldn’t suspicious about a sub…

Well, I did my duty – but I left it up to him to pull the trigger!

But as Jon himself pointed out, one's reputation in these games follows one around, so knowing that Jon had used those sort of strategies in past games, I was fully expecting him to do the same in Love Conquers! And I acted accordingly.
So did I – in fact IIRC my entire strategy was one of expecting an attack from Jon at any time. When it did come, in the form of a combined French/Inca attack I was able to beat it off and then go on the offensive with a pre emptive strike on Incan forces, adopt a defensive position on that front and take out the French piecemeal…

In fact, I was disappointed to see him leave the game without first unleashing some truly nefarious plot!
I think the nefarious plot was getting Stavros to attack me, with the likely promise of French help – that was until everyone else declared war on Stavros!

It would have been interesting if Hexagonian had stayed on as leader of the Inca, as IIRC he was quiet friendly with Stavros whereas Quinns was not – in the game…

    *Sigh* I will miss LC!

Jon a backstabber? What about Mobius? I hate being right next to mobius. All of my games i've been a bitch to that bloodsucking tyrant. Having to keep like 80 units tied up just waiting for his big push.

Big difference. Mobius may stab you, but he does it in the front, not the back! I've never seen him act dishonourably.

The biggest problem with CTP is that the advantage goes hugely to the attacker. One cannot hold out as a defender against a more powerful attacker, so it would probably have been better to have used those 80-odd units first!!

And I agree about Hexagonian. He looked to have some sort of agreement with Stavros. Had he stayed, the dynamics of the game would have been very different, with Australia not being so isolated, and thus falling quickly (note that France never came to Australia's aid!! ).

What's more, as regent of Greece (while I was on vacation), Hexagonian embellished with boldness and invention what had been only general instructions from me, thus helping Mobius thwart a combined French/Inca nuclear attack against Spain. It had to be a difficult decision to go to war as a regent, even though I had told him to support Spain if she were attacked. And it was the right decision.

Then again, if Quinns had stayed, things would also have been different, what with all the friction between Inca and France at that time. I think the two of them would have ended up at war, with others no doubt entering the fray!

    So many "what-ifs"...!

    Congratulations to you Rick!

Sorry I didn't stay in earlier, after taking out Australia, and whoop on France. That would have been interesting! But Jon's antics were too irritating to the point of taking the fun out of the game. You all knew him better than I did, so were able to take his never ending sermons in stride.

Congrats Rick- I'm proud to have a small hand in the victory march.

Congrats to Mobius and Keygen for surviving to the end.

Yeah, as leader of Inca, I had a nice slaving deal with Starvos and a nice tech trade deal with Rick. I think Starvos was ticked off when I dropped out - I can't say that I blame him either for that, but personal issues have a tendency to overrule gaming concerns.

Regarding the Greek attack on Inca while Greece was under my regency - it was an incredibly hard decision for me to make since Rick would of been the one that had to deal with any 'fallout' that would of occured. But I acted on what he laid out as his master plan.

Jon was a sneak, but he plays to win, and seeing how the game was going, it was inevitable that he would take a shot at the leader. To be totally honest, in looking at the powergraph, someone had to try to shake up the top.

And his end actions livened up an already entertaining game. Made for a good story.

You all are invited to try the CTP2 Cradle Mod now...

BTW, Mobius, I never trusted Jon in Semi Accl, and spent a lot of time trying to help Demos in this regard. It was not enough though...
