  • I'm a bit confused by some of the posts on pricing. In the UK the X-box 360 is already seemingly cheaper than the Wii by some margin, and if it is coming down further in April then the gap may widen.

    On Amazon:

Basic Wii bundle with Wii Sports: £289.99
Basic X-box with controller but no hard drive or games £189.99

    • All the more reason it's inexcusable for Nintendo's hardware to be so underpowered...

      • Well it probably would be more reasonable to look at how much the X-Box was on release.

And oddly, today Amazon has the Wii back in stock and they are £179.99. Quite a difference.

            Why?

            Was the Xbox a 60MHz N64?

The Wii is a clock-doubled Gamecube...

            • I have no idea whether that's true or not (it looks to me like you are oversimplifying but I'm not going to get into a techie debate. ) but it's not really the point.

I previously thought the Wii retailed here at £289, which did seem really high for what it is. But it was just a stock issue and it's down to £179.99 now, which given it is still pretty new is quite cheap. It will naturally come down over time, as the X-Box 360 did. Pricing strategies aren't just about a straight hardware comparison - whatever your hardware capabilities you want to slice off those with higher valuations that place a higher premium on being early adopters.

Oh, he's oversimplifying quite a bit. It's like saying the Bughati Veyron W16 is just two V-8's strapped together.

Asher seems to think that Nintendo is asking $800 per unit, or it's been out for a year or more... He forgets that nobody is arguing the technical aspects of the system (or, anyone that is has mental issues).

I have no idea why he keeps bringing them up as if we don't know them (or have such short term memory we forgot them from the last time he brought them up - 60 secs. ago).

I apreciate that several hard-core game magazines think Tiger woods golf was bad. Having rented it this weekend I can see why hard-core, pixel-whipped, jaded, power-hungry, graphic snobs would think that.

Having said that... my wife and I played for hours.

It was definately more fun than the WiiSports Golf (if only for a different course). I felt that it was worth getting for the low price a $50 because it's something that my family will play.

I have a PC downstairs. AMD X2 64 4600+ with 2Gig and an nVidia 8800 GTS 320. I play FEAR on it and it runs like a raped ape. My family doesn't bother with FEAR because it's too demanding and there's no depth to the story (face it, it's a "shoot everything that moves" game).

There's a difference between what Asher wants out of a game and what my wife wants out of one. Something I feel Asher is never going to understand.

Look at it this way Asher, there's as much chance of you changing my mind than of me changing yours. So please stop... it's getting old.

                  Well, DrSpike didn't know them...

When comparing prices it's important to consider what you're getting. He made a comment about comparing it to the Xbox on its launch...

The difference between you and the "hardcore gamer" such as the game review sites is the semblance of objectivity and the breadth of game experience to know when a game is just bad. The fact that you don't know what you're talking about makes it easier for you to get enjoyment out of crappy things, but that doesn't make you right or even in the majority.

I don't even like FEAR...what the hell are you talking about?

BTW, it actually is two V8s strapped together.

The Veyron features a W16 engine—16 cylinders in 4 banks of 4 cylinders, or the equivalent of two narrow-angle V8 engines mated in a "W" configuration.

By the way I think you missed this post explaining how you missed the subtle point being made.

I have no idea how you have survived thus far. It is mind-boggling that you are allowed to continue to breath. You are a waste of blood. The depth of your idiocy is stagering. There is no help for you.

                      In short, you're an idiot.

The stress factors for a transmission being able to handle 1001hp... Or shift timing that takes into account 16 cylinders... Or ignition timings or crankshaft strengths and tolerances...

It's NOT just "two V-8's strapped together". It's... Oh, why do I care. You are a lost cause.

                      Well, DrSpike didn't know them...
OK, I'll give you Dr. Spike (believe me, I'm not going to try and defend his attention span.)

OK, I'll say this as brainlessly as possible (not that you'll understand that either but I'll give it a shot)...

I'm not claiming to be a hard-core gamer. I am not a hard-core gamer. I think hard-core gamers have little social interaction and no life, I don't want to be a hard-core gamer. I actually love my kids and want to see them before they have children of their own, therefore I have no interest in being a hard-core gamer.

As such I derive quite a bit of enjoyment from the Wii gaming system. Not due to it's graphics, not due to it's ability to display on an HDTV (since I don't have one... I don't care). My enjoyment is derived from being social with my family. My interaction with them, with the game as a subject, is the basis for my enjoyment.

In other words, I enjoy my family, the game is immeterial. That's the part you don't get. I like other people.

So please, return to your relationship with the squiggly lines on your TV set and let the reset of us socialize in peace.

                      • I'm the idiot, but you're the one being entertained by Golf?

                        I think that's called self-pwnage.

You have no intention of reading any of the actual post, do you?

Something I wouldn't expect socially inept, intelectually stunted (look it up), "hard-core gamer" to understand.

For someone who should apreciate diversity you have a hard time understanding it.

                          • If you enjoy your family instead of the games, why don't you play board games or Name That Bible Verse or something. Clearly only an idiot would say the game is "immeterial".

For someone who should apreciate diversity you have a hard time understanding it.

What the hell does this have to do with diversity? You can enjoy all the games you want, I'm not saying we should ban anything.

                            What an idiot...
