I got an even better laugh when I saw how much a jump gate is....100 days to build.

What are your levels of Robotic Factory or Nanite Factory Spaced? (100 days seems a lot but I imagine a Nanite factory would half that, and as it's level increases so would the production time, but even so, I can't imagine how high a level you would need or either/both in order to reduce it to a realistic time period.

With level 3 robot factories that is cut down to 25 days. I could imagine destroying both levels of shipyards, using the space for more robot factories and then building the gate. I could also imagine me just waiting for 25 days - the moon doesn't get buildings upgraded too often as it is.
EDIT: And if someone built a nanite factory on their moon, well, they have way too much resources. To get space for 10 levels of robotic factories, a nanite factory and enough levels of shipyard to actually build something would cost a fortune just for the moonbases to build the buildings on.

Seems 25 days is still long time to wait though, but point taken Skanky, if you arn't building much there, it wouldn't make much difference to wait 5 or 25 days for the jump gate.
I don't understand why you would build a shipyard on your moon however. Can't you build whatever ships you want on your planet and then send them to your Moon? Why use the fields (which as you point out are at a premium) for Shipyards??

Basic defences. I have 10 probes and 10 missile launchers (or small lasers) on every colony. If someone probes me, particularly with enough probes to discover my tech levels, their probes die. Otherwise they could just probe my moon with 50 probes and not be at risk at all.

They send 1 probe, get next to no information and have a 20% chance of being detected. Do they then send 6 probes which they are guaranteed to lose, or move on to the next target? To get information from me, it is going to cost them crystal.
If one of your planets has no fleet in orbit, anyone can get your tech levels at no risk. This is doubly true where the colonies or moons in question are in your home system.
