  • I don't see anything unreasonable about Bosa stance. Apparently he wants either none of his signing bonus to be deferred OR no offset language. Whereas the Chargers want 2.5 mil of his bonus to be deferred (down from 6.8 mil) AND offset language. Apparently all the other #3 picks have gotten one or the other and he wants the same.

Chargers pulled their offer, so caving now might not help. Plus if he doesn't sign and sits out a year, he'll never have to deal with the Chargers FO ever again. That's gotta be worth quite a bit.

    • You don't get all that many years in Football. To throw away a key earning year would be brutal.
Let's say he sits, and then injures himself while staying in shape... Then he's screwed.

He tried, and failed. Sure he should cave at this point... why take the chance of losing his big payday.
The deal was a fair one.

      • I wouldn't call it fair but 15% deferred to March isn't that big of a deal either. Maybe he just doesn't want to play for the Chargers.

        • The team waited Bosa out, and once the Aug 8 deadline passed, he can't be traded this year. And the Chargers hold his rights.
So now he has no leverage, and with every passing day, his potential career earnings decline.

Plus, he has missed basically all of training camp, so his teammates will now hate him even more than the normal "rich spoiled first rounder" resentment.

The behavior on both sides is unreasonable and more than a little bit stupid. SD needs to choose between the offset language (to prevent double-dipping if Bosa is cut in his 5th year) and deferring bonus payments over time. Can't have both.

          • Laughable that they say they've never done it and don't want to. Clue, they haven't had to do it because they haven't drafted that high recently.

But all said in done, he should probably back down now. He has too much to lose. The risk of them giving up on the #3 draft pick in the first 3 years is pretty unlikely.
It's a silly dispute, a difference of at most, say, 1 percent of his pay. He'll lose more now that the Chargers are restructuring the deal to account for him missing actual games.

            Can't have both.
Why not? It's about 1 percent of his pay that's at stake. IMO, not nearly worth holding out.

            • Romo out 6-10 weeks with a broken vertebra from the Avril hit. Reportedly unrelated to previous back injuries. Link.

                        • Romo is older and beat up, like you 3.
I think his future is in coaching; although, even this morning he's better than Cutler.

                          • I don't know. Looking good in the preseason against vanilla defenses and second teamers is pretty easy. Especially with the O-line that they have. Let's see him do it in September.

No argument here on Romo vs Cutler.

Pretty sure Tony has seen his last NFL snap.

                              • Bosa signs.

On Sunday morning, before the team kicked off against the Vikings at 10 a.m. PT, the Chargers and France agreed to a deal largely resumbling the team's "best offer" from last week, a deal that features 85 percent cash payout of Bosa's $17 million signing bonus, or about $14.45 million, this calendar year, sources said. The rest will be deferred to next March. Roster bonus language was a notable difference, a source said, from last week's offer.
