      • I haven't lived in Vancouver now in 3 years and even then it was only for 4 months, but I guess Vancouver area is close enough. I was about as close to Vancouver as Chicago is to Buffalo.

Buffalo, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Detroit, St. Louis, Minnesota, Green Bay, Kansas City, Pittsburgh you have ten teams in that radius.

        • So pick the Vikings! Actually, don't....

I hate the unsportsmanlike celebration calls. WTF? You've just destroyed the other team, and they're all men out on the field, so who gives a toss how they celebrate? Make the most of it!!!!!

          • That's relatively new. Roger Goodell has felt that celebrations distract from the game

First off, many of the offensive penalties occur before the ball is snapped. Secondly, it's because penalties* either:
              a) cancel the results of the play and replay the down
              b) accept the results of the play and modify them

If most offensive penalties fell in the B category it would sometimes harm the defense - ie, if I use offensive pass interference to get a 60 yard completion, and you penalized me 10 or 15 yards, it would still be a good thing to do.

The reason category A replays the down is that the idea is the offense gained some unfair advantage on the play, so you cancel the play and do it over again, with a penalty to the offense. Taking away a down would be an additional, and very severe, penalty that isn't really the point of most penalties. A 10 yard penalty on holding for example is a HUGE penalty - once a holding penalty is assessed on your side of the field, there is a quite small chance at scoring points on that drive.

              * Intentional Grounding is not really an exception to this rule; the theory behind intentional grounding is that the assumed sack is granted to the defense, hence the down counts.

              • Steelers are 3-0 and could potentially be 4-0... what happens when Roethlisberger comes back? Is it possible that there will be a feeling of we don't even need him?

                • I think the choice of x={Charlie Batch, Ben Roethlisberger} is set with one solution. PIT is not exactly playing high quality teams so far, and they've always been more about D than O.

This was a franchise trying to trade him a few months ago. Keeping Batch or anybody else but Roethlisberger at QB wouldn't really be a football-based decision. It also wouldn't be without precedence since we've seen teams suspend or bench star players in the past regardless of what they thought they were losing on the field. If PIT were 0-3 right now, they would be virtually forced to start Roethlisberger but at 3-0, it shifts the equation just enough that the idea of forget Roethlisberger could start getting some traction.

                        • I like the call to go for it here, but I'm not sure it's the right move - down 7 with a good shot at getting the ball back, I wonder if I just kick the FG and then try to win the game on the next drive, rather than taking a ~20% chance at scoring/1st down now and then if not hope to score a TD to tie...

I wonder if they're afraid of kicking off to Washington

What were the Atlanta coaching staffs doing when he was down there over all those years?
