I'd completely agree 
  Fewer bench slots makes the game more interesting.  One backup per major position (QB, RB, WR) and one more for a D player, basically.  Maybe 6 for IDP, actually; you'd want to not totally cripple people with their bye weeks who have actually competent D players.
The major downside to a short bench is it really kills handcuff/two back situations (see: Knowshon/Correll, Lynch/Jackson, etc.) by making the second player take up a very valuable bench position.
