          • Well, I guess we now know how Washington could afford Albert Haynesworth despite having little cap space to work with...

            Redskins released DE Jason Taylor.
Tampa Bay is the early favorite to go after Taylor -- who is 35 BTW. In other news...

Seahawks agreed to terms with WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh on a five-year, $40 million contract. The deal includes $15 million in guarantees.
Cincinnati is now bringing in Laveranues Coles for a visit.

            • Wow... the AFC West suddenly has some life! No offense Ben, but I think the odds are against SD finishing 1st - and maybe even 2nd - in that division this year, unless they really bring their A game all year.
              Why?

They will have a healthy Merriman and Tomlinson. They have one of the best QBs in the game. For the first time in years, they have a solid front office.

Denver just lost their coach, KC and Oakland have all done the same.

I can see KC finishing second, over a total collapse by Denver, who is even switching to a 3-4.

              • To add some spice to the Cassel trade, Detroit and Tampa Bay were apparently interested in trading to get Cutler on their teams with Cassel going to Denver

Denver obviously declined both offers, but Cutler didn't seem amused
                Kassel > Cutler.

Denver would be better without then with Cutler.

                • Cutler is one of the Top 10 QBs in the league. Just because his defense sucked is no reason to blame him. Though Cutler seems to be a bit sensitive to criticism.

                  And Cassel isn't spelled with a K.

                    Last season?

                    Manning
                    Brees,
                    Rivers,
                    Warner,
                    Roethlisberger,
                    Rodgers
                    Romo
                    Pennington
                    Schaub
                    McNabb
                    Cassell
                    Ryan

Those are all the QBs with at least 3000 yards passing that have better QB ratings then Cutler. Cutler ranks at number 13.

Just because his defense sucked is no reason to blame him.
No, I blame him for 18 INTs.

The only one who is more overrated was Favre with 22 INTs.

He's an above average QB, but here is Matt Cassell.

Cassell: 63.4 pct, 3693 yards, 21 TDs and 11 Ints. QB rating of 89.4
Cutler: 62.3 pct, 4526 yards, 25 TDs and 18 Ints. QB rating of 86.0

If we look at TDs, he is 7th.

He and Cassell are precisely equal in TD/Att. So for the exact same efficiency in passes, we expect to see a more then 50 percent increase in INTs.

                    Not worth it.

                    • Let's look at some more in depth stats, that are less dependent on the talent around the players or the systems they run (as it is, for example, easier to rack up nice completion percentage numbers in a West Coast offense than a down the field passing attack):

Cutler was 5th in DYAR last season and 8th in DVOA.

Cassell was 17th in DYAR and 20th in DVOA.

So overall and per play, Cutler was far more valuable.

                      • To be honest, it'll be interesting to see if Cassel is for real or not. He surprised me by doing as well as he did last year (mostly at the end) but given the competition he was facing I don't know how significant that is. I'm glad he won't be around for the Pats schedule next year, at the very least.

                          West Coast offense?

                          Cutler YPA = 7.19
                          Cassell YPA = 6.19

You want a true down the field attack?

                          Rivers = 7.82

I really don't see how INT and TD/Att have anything to do with the talent surrounding the player. If anything, Cutler's surrounded talent on offense is greater then Cassell.

That Cassell outperformed Cutler in his first year is remarkable.

I find it interesting that they rank Matt Ryan 4th on DVOA. Seems to be a rather unreliable stat. Is Matt Ryan really the 4th best QB in football?

Are we not familiar with an example?

And, regardless, a yard per pass is quite a difference.

And how in the **** does this turn into a conversation about Rivers?! Jesus Christ, let it go!

Aside from the fact that he didn't.

4th best QB per play. And yes, I think he was definitely up there this past year.
