        • Wow, that O-Line sucks. How many times does poor Barry Sanders get hit in the backfield?

            • FWIW, in the space of a year, the Lions lost both their young starting guards. In the 91 season Lions lost RG Mike Utley to a neck injury which paralyzed him. In the summer of 92 LG Eric Andolsek was working in his front yard, and a semi ran off the highway that ran by there and killed him.

I always wondered how many more yards Sanders would have gotten if he had had an OL like the Cowboys had. (Not to say the Lions' OL would have been that good if they hadn't lost those guards. But they would have been better.) Imagine all those 2-yd losses being at minimum 2-yd gains, then add in his talent.

Of course, part of Barry's magic was to see him caught "dead-to-rights" in the backfield and somehow juke his way out of there to turn it into a gain (or even just extending the play), leaving many defenders picking up their jockstraps.

Bears fans saw that a million times. Just as you thought we had him down for a loss, he would go for twenty yards. He was a great runner. One of the best ever.

                  • Top 5? That's an interesting question.

                    Jim Brown
                    Barry Sanders
                    Emmitt Smith
                    Walter Payton
                    and Tomlinson.

Jim Brown for his 5+ YPC

                    Sanders for his explosiveness.

                    Emmitt Smith for longevity.

Payton for his all-around excellence. He did everything well.

I think LT has earned his spot here already, and he's not yet done.

                          Was he really that good?
