  • If the Yankees really lose all these parts, the AL East is going to get awfully boring for the next few years. I think the Yanks have some great young parts, but its hard not to predict Red Sox dominance until the Yanks recoup. Well, winning more division titles should be fun

Maybe Toronto will finally make the playoffs again, in the next few years

Never underestimate the power of $200 million. Maybe more of it will be spent wisely if they retool.

Here's the thing though: Torre would make things a lot easier if he decides to retire, and truly means it. That way it comes off as his choice rather than Steinbrenner cutting ties. If that's how it comes out, I'd feel a lot better about the prospects of retaining the essential components. If Steinbrenner says "Torre's not coming back because I said so", that's a de-facto firing.

Basically, the important thing is that Torre has to be the one to make the choice. If the choice is taken out of his hands, expect the exodus to begin en-masse.

Yep... and they watch it on TV, because they are too old to make it out to the stadium

Even if a lower percentage of people in the area watch the game than in a smaller market, the total number of people watching could still be greater.

I don't know about an en masse exit. I could see Pettitte deciding against excercising his option if Torre goes, but that's it (though that would hurt). The others will come back if they're paid to come back.

I suspect the 2008 Yankees will look a whole lot like the 2007 Yankees in the end. The team doesn't really have much choice. Letting ARod go = no playoffs in 2008, almost certainly. They cannot replace that production, and while I think the pitching will be better next year, the offense will regress even WITH ARod. Without him, it would drop dramatically, and the pitching won't be able to make up the difference. The Yanks would be fighting to stay ahead of the Blue Jays.

I'd be fine with that if there were position player prospects in the pipeline ready or nearly ready to replace ARod and/or Posada, but there aren't. The Yanks have some prospects in the low minors, but nobody is close to ML ready. Their system was very pitching-heavy, which is great and all since it produced Hughes, Chamberlain, Kennedy and some other possibly useful guys, but Wilson Betemit would be the replacement for ARod if he left and GAPING HOLE OF NOTHINGNESS (Jose Molina, probably) would replace Posada.

So they must pay through the nose, while continuing to work on developing a new core of position players, which will take years. I'm on board with that, because this core is still excellent. Improve the pitching some and you've got a championship-level teamk, even with the inevitable regression from the veteran players.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

Any thurs-sun day game will end up going against Golf... imagine what the ratings would be like then And that's the best ratings period...

I just don't see AZ having a significant television market for DBacks. The fact that the stadium is full when they play the Cubs but it's emtpy when they play the Rockies tells me their fans don't exist, age aside...

Besides, you should know the going rate for ads that target 25-34 versus 55+... I somehow don't see Fox showing a bunch of Viagra and Lipitor ads instead of Miller and Coors...
