Well, to me it represents the fact that many muslims want to be a part of what is more about being a protest against religious extremism. Their point is that a muslim police officer died in defence of Charlie Hebdo - it's an act of solidarity.

My first instinct was solidarity with CH, but when I dug deeper I realised theirs is not a freedom of speech I want to have solidarity with. Yes they have a right to offend (though it is telling that even in the west, certain subjects are taboo, such as nazism and the holocaust), but it doesn't mean I want to be a part of that and, in effect, condone their cartoons - and I don't think too many muslims could with good conscience say "Je suis Charlie" for those very reasons, whereas they can say "Je suis Ahmed" to show that they are against these atrocities because muslims were victims too...

In Belgium, one of our our resident stupid Arabs already is misusing the "je suis achmed".
Isn't the point that we're all supposed to coexist and uphold the law, even when others don't do as we'd like? The guys who made Charlie Hebdo were pretty much *******s. *******s witha point, mind you, and totally within their right to do so. The policeman was upholding his duty, to the point of being killed, even though he was protecting people who mocked his religion. For all I dislike organised religion in general, Ahmed is a much better role model for society in general.

We murder more of our residents than Israel murders their residents (not citizens for them, mostly, while I think mostly citizens for us), so of course we don't think it is such a big deal.

But saying something like "Someone should just kill X" while hanging out with some friends hundreds of miles from where X lives is not actionable.

When I read this my first thought was... why would the President say "Let's kill Imran right now!" or "someone should just kill Imran". Beckett stylée.

Was sad to see it was not the intention

            • I think that Charlie Hebdo is worth lionizing because making fun of Islam is a worthy goal on its own merits.

Presumably you also extend that sentiment to all the other religions?

                          OK fair enough.
For me it is just a very divisive tag as i find it implies that somehowe muslim victims are different from the other ones that were shot.

                              • The terrorist attacks in France were horrible. It was good that people flocked together to voice their anger. At the same time, the 2000 killed over the weekend in Nigeria was never mentioned anywhere... Or the 10 year old girl who was sent on a walk with a suicide west attached, by Boko Haram. It says something about us in the West I think.
