Oh screw it; I believe in "Render unto Ceasar" Christ was saying that his and our concern is, or should be in the latter case, His Father's kingdom, not Ceasar's. It has broad and deep implications towards Christian citizenship in the temporal, if so.

And why again were they punished?Originally posted by The Mad Monk View PostThe spiritual authority, not the civil authority. You just said it yourself, they submitted to punishment. They did not rise up, or attempt to overthrow the Roman Empire.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

I don't know about you guys, but I'm a big supporter of the quadlemma. Lunatic, liar, Lord, or just some guy messin' around. Has anyone ever really considered that? Maybe he wasn't a megalomaniac, maybe he wasn't a con artist, maybe he wasn't the son of God--maybe he was just some pothead who liked talkin' far out ****.Click here if you're having trouble sleeping.

I think that's fairly well put. Especially the last part - Christian citizenship in the temporal is animated by the requirements of the Kingdom. As I recently read "Living Biblically is living politically".Originally posted by Buster's Uncle View PostOh screw it; I believe in "Render unto Ceasar" Christ was saying that his and our concern is, or should be in the latter case, His Father's kingdom, not Ceasar's. Christ said that Rome was a divinely appointed authority, and that includes Pilate. So you think that by accepting their deaths, they asserted that Rome was an authority worth following?
They became martyrs by asserting the authority of Christ over spiritual matters. They became martyrs for denying the authority of Rome - same reason Jesus became a martyr (you don't really think the Pilate would have crucified someone just because the Jewish leaders were getting all agitated that he was declaring himself God, do you? - Jesus is Lord means that Caesar is not).
Christ submitted to the punishment, because it was in the civil authority of Pilate, as authority had been granted to him by God.Submitting to punishment is necessary because Jesus was against violence. What else are you going to do? Non-violence also shows how corrupt the civil authorities are (MLK also learned this lesson).Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

Question for you, Imran, do you believe that clinic protesting is wrong, because it defies the authority of an unjust abortion law?Denying the authority of an unjust law. No, it's disputing an action or law of an authority while maintaining the legitamacy of the authority. That's why getting arrested is part of civil disobedience, while beating on cops is not.Originally posted by Imran Siddiqui View PostDenying the authority of an unjust law. I'm not sure how you interpret the discussion with Pilate where Christ affirms that Pilate is the divinely appointed authority of the realm.Paul? I'd prefer something from Jesus.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

Disputing an action or law on the basis of a higher law isn't challenging the authority of the law giver?
