Is there still any point to the US President having to be a natural-born citizen of the United States?

Legally, he was subject of the Queen - Queen Anne, via the Act of Settlement in 1701, providing for the Hanoverian Succession.Or King George III as he's known to humans and people with genuine history degrees.
George didn't have the de Jure or de facto right to rule prior to shortly before Anne passed on.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

I had fun on the Boston tour remarking how little has changed - they celebrate traitors and hang loyalists. Benedict did far more than Revere ever did to further the revolution.A good egg, though sometimes confused with a Dutch female.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

Legally that's what the term 'subject to the Queen' means. The de jure right to rule granted to the Hanoverian succession under Queen Anne by the 1701 Act of Settlement pertaining to all of England and the union of the crowns. Please don't be stupid. Please.
Really, please.
It will be interesting seeing the present occupants attempt to unravel the Act of Settlement.

Far be it from me to inject an element of common sense into this, but given that you never will...Originally posted by Ben Kenobi View PostLegally that's what the term 'subject to the Queen' means.
I know it is difficult to get over local or long standing prejudices, yet if we will suffer ourselves to examine the component parts of the English Constitution, we shall find them to be the base remains of two ancient tyrannies, compounded with some new Republican materials.
First. The remains of Monarchical tyranny in the person of the King.
Secondly. The remains of Aristocratical tyranny in the persons of the Peers.
Thirdly. The new Republican materials, in the persons of the Commons, on whose virtue depends the freedom of England.
The two first, by being hereditary, are independent of the People; wherefore in a CONSTITUTIONAL SENSE they contribute nothing towards the freedom of the State.
To say that the constitution of England is an UNION of three powers, reciprocally CHECKING each other, is farcical; either the words have no meaning, or they are flat contradictions.
First. That the King it not to be trusted without being looked after; or in other words, that a thirst for absolute power is the natural disease of monarchy.

Ahh, yes, I'm sure Paine was aggrieved by the illegitimate rule of the Hanoverians. It would have been interesting trolling him about the Glorious Revolution.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

They're easily confused by serial killing wannabes chasing PhDs across the Texan panhandle with unwashed stolen supermarket bags wrapped around their faecally smeared 'history' degree certificates.Originally posted by gribbler View PostYou know he wrote "George III", right? Not "George I"?

Thomas Paine immigrated to the US in 1774. After the revolution was over he moved back to Europe and was even elected to the French National Assembly. When he wound up on the wrong side of the power struggles he had considerable difficulty convincing the US ambassador to claim him as an American citizen. Eventually his friend James Madison intervened.Originally posted by Felch View PostAs long as they were citizens when the Constitution was adopted, Paine and Hamilton would have both been eligible.
Alexander Hamilton was born in the Caribbean, moving to Boston in 1772, so by 1787 he would have lived the required 14 years in America."I say shoot'em all and let God sort it out in the end!

Aren't you embarrassed that Ben tricked you into replying to him?“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”
