The British Empire is worth considerable respect. That I speak English halfway across the world from Albion and that this is seen as normal and not bizarre - is a historical oddity all things considered. This is part of the problem for which I attempt to address. We seem to assume that the historical record will favor this continuing without some of the planks that got England there. Will we be teaching a class in the future about how one little Island in England formed an Empire? Probably not until it's all gone.

I'm not sanguine about England's future and as a Steyn reader - surely this would be understandable? We hear attacks on Westminster, on Canterbury, on Christianity in general and what's the collective response? Pretty much a shrug and "we can move on without such medievalisms. Did I say it was only positive? No. Did I say it's something that, overall, was substantially positive? Absolutely.

Look at America. Largest economy in the world. Do you think that happens without English settlement? India, largest democracy in the world. Does that happen under France?

It would be difficult to come up with a part of the world that hasn't had considerable influence from and be considerably better off because of the Empire.
