The thing with unions is that they only really lead to tolerable mediocrity. I worked at Safeway, which is a union shop, and most people weren't that impressed by the deal they were getting. The top wage was still only about $15/hour, although the benefits were decent. About the best thing you could say about it was that we were better off than the poor bastards at Walmart. The problem is that retail work isn't productive enough to make old school UAW living standards possible. Maybe if Walmart were UFCW, that would change.

Essentially, everyone will be paying for these abortions - including prolife Catholics. A much better system would let people buy the coverage that they need. If they want abortion they could pay into a plan that would provide it. If they didn't want it, then they could pay into a health care plan that didn't include abortion. This way, prolifers would save money by not funding things contrary to our beliefs. Folks who want abortions would no longer be free riders and would pay for the services they use.

I reject the premise of your post as it presupposes Obamacare as a single payer system rather than what it is at this time: an onerous government imposition of contract terms in a private negotiation between two private parties. If and when it makes the transition to a single payer system, your comparison to the taxes used to fund the government will make more sense and take on the air of validity.
