  • VW actually wants to unionize its American factory; Republicans freak out.

Back home in the Fatherland Volkswagen sees the benefits of 'works councils', giving employees a seat the corporate decision table, and wants to do the same at it's Chattanooga plant. US law prevents this unless employees are part of a union. VW is fine with that but is facing opposition from state politicians, some of it's US executives, and many hourly workers. When the vote comes to unionize (or not) VW will be in odd position of siding with the UAW.

VW "said recently that the Chattanooga plant might have a better chance at landing a hot new sport utility vehicle for the assembly plant, which now produces Passat sedans, if it had a works council to represent it."

"To many Americans, the notion of works councils belongs alongside socialized medicine and six-week vacations as examples of the practices that have doomed Europe to near-zero growth. But another way to look at it is that works councils are part of a model that has helped preserve Germany’s industrial base and hold the country’s unemployment to a relatively low level: 5.2 percent, compared with 7.3 percent in the United States."

Every VW plant in the world has a works council that gives labor a voice at the management table. But selling the idea at its plant in Tennessee has been tough.

I love how state Republican officials are trying to block this simply because they're afraid the growth of unions in the state would be bad for them politically.

The real news here is that its freaking illegal to include workers on the board unless there is an artificial third party shoehorned in there, ie the Union.

Why do you put the desires of the union ahead of that of the workers themselves Oerdin?

Tennessee is right to work. That ain't gonna change either. VW is perfectly free to relocate to Missouri.

I feel the "right to work state" will be the new "slave state" in the next civil war.

So far, the Factory workers have obtained 602 signatures against the union out of a work force of about 1500. It looks likely that they will obtain a majority of workers to sign their petition against unionization. This has nothing to do with the State. While true that the State government appears to not want unionization, it is the workers themselves that are leading the charge against unionization.

Perhaps a little research on the subject would be in order for you Oerdin.

Wait, so the American workers are saying that they don't want the extra work and jobs? Cos that's the message I got from VW...
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

Precisely the opposite. Right to work states are free. In the slave states, you have to pay your union to work.

What's so hard about VW operating as a non-union plant?

"Right to work" is a deceptive misnomer; it's an example of dog whistle politics in action.
