IIRC, it was mostly for asking the patient if he or she would like to spare the family a burden since they were going to die anyway.

Reimburse them for time spent with the patient. There are a number of services doctors can claim for Medicare reimbursement. Since a lot of doctors already counsel patients on advance directives, living wills, etc., legislators thought it made sense that this should count as a medical service. The DEATH PANEL section of the law was literally a glossary clarifying that end-of-life counseling services are a part of a doctor's services.

        • It's kind of gross you're into force feeding someone who can't render consent.
From what I read, she could eat from a spoon if fed. Don't see how that's different from feeding a baby.

          • It is perfectly reasonable to move on, and I would encourage friends/relatives in similar situations to do so. But it still means that Ben has a point.
Exactly so. She had a family that was willing to look after her. Many folks don't have that luxury. That she died and her parents weren't given the opportunity to do so is a travesty.

The best outcome was for Michael to just step aside, let them care for Terri, and move on with his life. She didn't need to die.

                • Doc, so sorry to hear about your wife, I hope she is comfortable and isn't suffering too much.

It's hard to watch loved ones at death's door, my wife was there in 2010 with her myxoma and strokes, not expected to live, but she did. Somehow she made a complete recovery. I still can't believe it after the way she was in the ER. All good wishes to you Doc for a good outcome.

In order to accommodate the wishes of religious fanatics. So forget about common law, centuries of tradition, the role of the husband as confessor to his wife...

Funny how the same zealots are happy to spout about 'the sanctity of tradition' when it comes to opposing marriage for gays and lesbians.

Sexual fidelity be damned! Amazing how you demand the privileges be granted without concamitant responsibilities.

You are quite right that he had a long list of rights and responsibilities. You are also correct that in his failure to perform these responsibilities, he had decided that he no longer believed himself to be constrained by them.

He wasn't Terri's husband anymore. Hadn't been for quite some time.

So now you're a lawyer and apparently privy to their marital relations.

Yeah, that would be that whole marriage contract thing, which you conveniently decide is inoperative when it comes to your beliefs about how to treat humans in a vegetative state.

He has two kids by his then mistress now wife. This isn't exactly a private relationship. He'd checked out a long time ago.

Does it have an out clause saying that if your wife is sick that you are no longer married to her?

I bet those are amazing vows. "In sickness and in Health".

You do understand that the marriage vows you are talking about mean basically nothing in a legal sense right? You can be married and go screw as many people as you like, and have kids with all of them, and continue to be married just fine as long as your partner is ok with that.
