I don't think the bet was with me.
Not sure. All I know is that I was a **** about it and I was wrong. So. Go ahead. I'll wear whatever you have me wear.

Now, if it was a picture of the gayest marine ever, that would be good.
What is the joy in buttsecks? I just don't get that.

I'm very happy for you, Alby.
When did you realize that this would be the time you make it?
          And how does it feel?

Unlike recruit training, officer candidates are placed in leadership billets (that range from candidate company commander to squad leader) and are evaluated by the staff. Before giving me my favorable squad leader evaluation about 3 weeks in, one of my sergeant instructors told me he had a lot of respect for anyone who comes through OCS a second or even a third time, as in my case (there were two other retreads in my platoon, including an enlisted SNCO). I realized as long as I didn't do anything stupid or get injured I was pretty much pre-ordained to graduate. Anyone with that sense of commitment and overall toughness belongs in the Marine Corps. Probably because **** like this:

            and this:

in the winter sucks enough just one time, let alone again and again.

I finished with the second highest academic average and I was #2 in the company for overall GPA for a few weeks until my by OCS standards low physical graded events scores reduced my overall GPA to an 89 point something. I was gunning for a graduation honor but came 0.20 grade points (which is like a few wrong test questions) away from getting the Marine Federal Credit Union award for best academic performance. I was a little bummed but OCS is just the first step. OCS performance means little and an award even less.

The barracks I'm in this weekend is like a ghetto college dorm. It's dilapidated, there's apparently a mildew problem, and the lights kept flickering til the power went off completely for about two hours. Hot water is iffy, piss-stained mattresses, and the fridge in the room is broken and taped up. It's co-ed and there's alcohol everywhere with lieutenants hollering "Booty booty butt cheeks" through the hallways for like 10 minutes straight and blasting Latin hip hop next door. Basically, it's like going back to college.
Welcome to USMC barracks. They're the worst of all of them. Of course, they don't hold a candle to National Guard forts' accomodations (in terms of ****tiness, that is), since most of the NG bases are World War II-vintage.

                                This should be interesting.

Since I was an early check-in, I've been designated my platoon's platoon sergeant. That should also be interesting. Semper gumby.
I could cope with the fighting. It is the lack of privacy, poor toilet facilities (though I would probably have my personal thunder-box) and bunking with dickheads that put me off the army.

A massive congratulations Al B Sure, you've dedicated much, over-come derision and kept on going despite the set-backs. I'm sure it'll be the making of you...perhaps you'll be able to drive, swim and take a decent photograph by the end of it.

Have you had to shoot anything yet?
