The barracks I'm in this weekend is like a ghetto college dorm. It's dilapidated, there's apparently a mildew problem, and the lights kept flickering til the power went off completely for about two hours. Hot water is iffy, piss-stained mattresses, and the fridge in the room is broken and taped up. It's co-ed and there's alcohol everywhere with lieutenants hollering "Booty booty butt cheeks" through the hallways for like 10 minutes straight and blasting Latin hip hop next door. Basically, it's like going back to college.

This should be interesting.

Since I was an early check-in, I've been designated my platoon's platoon sergeant. That should also be interesting. Semper gumby.

My roommate this weekend is a Marlboro-smoking lieutenant waiting for his MOS school to start. He recently stopped drinking after waking up with a broken forearm, still encrusted with a cast. He immediately engaged me in a discussion about whether or not there is a meaningful distinction between agnosticism and atheism. Between his occasional transpositions of 'evolutionist' for 'atheist', I spied a copy of Left Behind next to his piss cutter. He then told me how ****ty the barracks is (pointing out a single tile that he bleached and scrubbed for 3 hours and how distinctly off-off-white it is compared to the yellowish-brown of the rest of the deck) and about the colorful characters surrounding me. He made it clear that he doesn't make friends; he just studies people. At around 2130, he went out to find interesting people to study.

That apparently wasn't a difficult task. I'm surrounded by the remnants of what was once the infamous TBS Mike Company, a working party of lieutenants reduced to a shadow by the specter of sequestration. Some are injured but the majority are either recycles (some have been in a holding pattern here for over 3 years) or lieutenants awaiting separation from the Marine Corps for various reasons, such as DUI's or simply resigning their commissions. My roommate told me there's a guy across the hall who is 'completely delusional', but he never explained what he meant by that. It all hardly seems like the best place to put a fresh boot lieutenant a day out of the OCS environment of drill instructors pounding the mantra of 'Honor. Courage. Commitment.' with the regularity of a quick time cadence, but it may be beneficial to throw some cold water on the past 10 weeks of hard-charging indoctrination.

At 0230, he wakes me up by hollering 'LIGHTS LIGHTS LIGHTS!' in the middle of him and a female lieutenant watching and discussing the movie Big Fish, which, if you haven't seen it, is like Forrest Gump on acid. Still only 12 hours removed from being administered the oath of office by Lt. General Mills, and 23 hours since being awoken by the all-too-familiar-at-OCS "BANG! BANG! BANG! Good morning, Gunnery Sergeant, the time on deck is....", this environment combined with anything by Tim Burton seemed exceedingly surreal.
