What if women just don't want to take STEM courses? Why not just leave them alone and let them decide what they want to do? For example, they seem to like becoming lawyers and doctors; law school and med school enrollment is about 50-50. They also seem to like getting grad degrees in education, nursing, and the humanities.
My take - 100 ladies working as doctors are not going to put in the same hours as 100 men. Ergo - if the profession keeps the same number of slots, there is going to be a shortage as lady doctors take time off to have kids - spend time with their kids, etc. Doctors work an insane schedule that isn't very compatible with the way that most women prefer to work. Either the schedule changes (unlikely), or the lady doctors change their way of working (also unlikely). Are they going to open up more slots? That's the only way I can see it working and doctor is one of the few occupations where people are in more not less demand.
I think it's great that they are going to school and getting degrees. I've worked with quite a few of them over the years. Wonderful people.
Which century?
