She believes she'd definitely prefer to be a nurse, and her coursework is slightly better for nursing. Suppose a young man is considering the same things, but his preferences and academic record are reversed. He's just a bit better at BME, and he believes he'd prefer it.

You're an admissions officer, and you've got one spot at each school. Which ones would you admit them to?
I won't say I know what to do about it, but I'd say it's probably too late to do anything about it by the time things get to the admissions officer.

Most elementary school teachers are still women. And I've seen evidence (can't remember where, so take this with a grain of salt) that said female teachers, who are sometimes not great at mathy and sciencey things because of whatever biases existed when they were kids, don't always do a particularly good job of inspiring young girls to take up the mantle. It's not a conscious thing. It's just that some female (homeroom, not subject-specific) teachers don't sound confident when teaching STEM subjects, and this lack of confidence infects the girls. So it's a cycle that reinforces itself.

That said, my girlfriend is an elementary school teacher, and she's not terribly good at math (by her own admission), but she's come to understand math much better now that she's had to teach it. Additionally, my Calc professor is a woman, and so far she's been a way better teacher than my male Physics professor. Generalities are generalties.

It is ? How is that, exactly ? It only took until the 1960s for the U.S. to come about to the notion that 'all men' being created equal actually meant men who were a bit darker than milky white.

There wasn't a colour bar in the U.K - and in the 19th Century it had a Sephardic Jew as a Prime Minister and an Indian in the House of Lords. Oh, and a black commander of white soldiers in WWI.

Don't take my word for it though. Do some reading.

                    • The British weren't racist?

Sure. Whatever you say. That whole empire thing made sure the entire world was aware of British prejudices and oppression.

Which is why India is a parliamentary democracy. Sure, Britain was the worst colonial power, except for all the others.

I didn't say they weren't, did I ? Just that for a country which had the notion of 'all men are created equal' as a founding declarative text, it sure took a long time to get around to putting that into practice.

                            • Ann Romney has been boo-hooing about how hard a presidential campaign is, and that we should stop picking on her husband.
