I agree, but only because doctors aren't told what sort of tradeoffs they should be making. Four years ago I went to the hospital because of pain in my non-appendix side. The doctor diagnosed me with kidney stones in less than 30 seconds. He was completely confident. There was no doubt whatsoever in his voice.

He then ordered a CT scan for me, just to make sure.

I'm not an expert on health, but I understand those are expensive. Someone, somewhere should have been there to tell him "no, it's OK, I trust you, you don't have to back this up with expensive machinery. If you're that confident, let's go ahead and assume it's kidney stones and move on."

It's not that what he did was fraudulent, or malpractice. CT scans do help confirm a kidney stones diagnosis. It's just a very large price to pay for that information.

It is worth mentioning that young women now do significantly better in the schooling system now than young men do. I suspect that in my generation, women will be more successful in plenty of areas than men are.

This would be an insightful comment if one was ignorant enough to ascribe academic success with the rigid structure of Western education to real-world success.

There's a lot of science to show the way schools are typically taught these days play to the strengths of girls and not boys. The real world is not a classroom.

As I understand it, a lot of that has to do with the current teaching paradigm, which actually seems to (unintentionally) discriminate against stereotypical male behavior. It's great that women are doing better, but it would be better still if men and women were both doing great.

There's also still a great disparity between men and women in STEM stuff. Take my current semester.

Calc 2: 19 men, 11 women
Physics: 7 men, 2 women

If you understood the reasons girls tend to outperform boys in school, you'd see how it's unrelated.

If the real world was about sitting patiently at a desk for hours at a time absorbing knowledge through eyes and ears rather than hands-on experience, you'd have a point. It's not about Darwinism or any **** like that, it's just about how people learn.
