Why wouldn't they pay income tax? Even SS is taxed. Only Roth IRAs are not at this point, AFAIK -- and that's only because they are taxed at the time it is deposited.

About a quarter of the 47% who don't pay the income tax are in fact retired elderly people. BTW slightly less than half of the people who don't pay income tax do pay payroll taxes and various other taxes (excesize taxes, etc...) at the Federal level and if you count state and local government taxes then 77% of all the taxes people actually pay to the government (at all levels) are actually taxes other than the Federal income tax. So claiming people don't pay taxes is complete bull**** as they're ignoring a full 77% of the taxes real people actually pay.

Conservatives though like to only talk about the income tax because it is one of the only progressive taxes left on the books so they can whine that poor little rich people need yet another tax cut.

Do they want the State to subsidize gas? I must be missing something because many republicans talk about this and I dont think they want more subsidies.

Taxing people for being hard working and productive isn't helping things. And yes - poor people pay income taxes too, Dinner. Saw an excellent study out there - that someone on welfare receives about 30k in benefits from the federal government tax free. That's much more than many people will see in a year - even if they work and pay taxes. This is why entitlement reform is completely necessary - that and the fact that the US is broke.

It's not a black and white 'those people get welfare while all those other people stand on their own feet'. The majority of people get some form of government help, the only question is usually how much and what form it takes. The nonsense you just referred to is part of a divisive republican campaign to try and get people to turn on each other and look down their noses at the poorest sections of society, despite the implicit hypocracy of it. It's also about as far away from christianity as you can get, so you should be deeply ashamed of spouting such garbage.
