  • From what I understand, the governors fear that their states will be unable to roll back the medicaid expansions when the federal government stops ponying up, or that emergency across-the-board cuts will mean the federal government doesn't end up footing the bill in the short term anyway.
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

After that, the states will pick up 5 percent of the cost through 2019, and 10 percent of the cost thereafter.
Mississippi already has an problem paying for Medicaid now. It can't afford an expansion.

      • How does that even make any sense? Obamacare tries to help people like this, and certain states refuse to go along with it. Your comment (predictably) makes literally no sense.

Are we supposed to give Obamacare points because it's so spectacularly inept as to try and fail hard?

When the people in your state are suffering from a massive lack of healthcare and someone offers to pay between 100% and 90% of the cost of improving the situation then you'd be a fool to turn that down. Those states could very well raise the money with a relatively tiny tax increase, if the Republicans would stop signing ridiculous Grover Norquist pledges and get back to the real world.

Oh come on now, no governor honestly fears that the federal government is suddenly going to welch on its obligations, the very idea is absurd. They may use that as a feeble excuse for turning down such a generous offer from the federal government, but it's really not believable.

              Agreed. Rollback Obamacare.

Is this conclusion the result of your obviously extensive research or more likely a knee jerk reaction?

Obamacare makes it slightly better. Still bad.

                  • No, Obamacare makes it far, far worse. From the Hoover Institute:

The underappreciated truth is that the ACA has serious adverse impacts on young Americans, far more significant and longer lasting than temporary eligibility to remain on a parent’s insurance.

If it means raising an extra billion a year long term, then it means the federal government must be contributing 9 billion a year. Does that not sound like a pretty small contribution to receive a much larger increase in funding?

Ffs, this is funding that will massively improve the lives of people actually living in the state, its not money being sent off to some giant fund in Washington.

What the US needs is a PROPER system, like the one we have in parts of Europe. We've had it for a while and have got some dead meat and rust on it, but still it works much better than the poor excuse for a system the US has.

I'm talking about a state in which the entire budget is ~ 5 billion. It sounds like a large contribution to me.

I mean the entire budget. It is only 5.6 billion.
