In 1938, with the rise of Hitler, Berlin, who was Jewish and a first-generation European immigrant, felt it was time to revive it as a "peace song", and it was introduced on an Armistice Day broadcast in 1938 sung by Kate Smith, on her radio show.[5] Berlin had made some minor changes; by this time, "to the right" might have been considered a call to the political right, so he substituted "through the night" instead. He also provided an introduction that is now rarely heard but which Smith always used: "While the storm clouds gather far across the sea / Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free / Let us all be grateful for a land so fair, / As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer." As early as 1943, there were attempts on making "God Bless America" as the national anthem of the United States, that would replace the "Star Spangled Banner". However, there was stiff opposition from ultra-conservatives who lived in the rural areas of the mid-western states, as well as in the entire deep Southern states, because the song was written by a foreigner, who was also a Jew, and a minority. Those people lived in the areas where there were fewer of no Jewish communities in their areas, and it was opposed by many white groups, including the entire Ku Klux Klan, the Nazi parties, and other white supremacist organizations. Any attempt to make the change of the national anthem, required two-thirds in both houses of congress, which they could never succeed.

A Democrat employer interviews a potential employee applicant who happens to be Democrat. The interview went very well; the employer did not quite promise to hire the applicant, but expressed interest and asked the applicant to come back for a second interview. The Democrat employer finds out on the applicant's Facebook wall that he is a Republican, so the employer calls up the applicant and to the applicant's confusion, tells him "we found someone else," because the employer has an unofficial policy in not hiring people who are Republican.

Pool’s ‘White Only’ sign infuriates Cincinnati father

Michael Gunn said he was so upset when he saw his landlord’s poolside “White Only” sign that he believes was aimed at his black daughter that he could not remain living at the Cincinnati duplex.

Mr. Gunn testified Friday at an Ohio Civil Rights Commission hearing in Cincinnati that the sign at the duplex where he rented an apartment cost his family emotionally and financially. The hearing was held to consider penalties that could include punitive and compensatory damages against Mr. Gunn’s former landlord.

The commission found on Sept. 29 that landlord Jamie Hein, who claimed that the 10-year-old girl’s hair products clouded the pool, discriminated against the child. The commission ruled that Ms. Hein, who is white, violated the Ohio Civil Rights Act by posting the sign.

Ms. Hein did not attend Friday’s hearing, and a recording said her voicemail was full. The state has said Ms. Hein gave up her right to challenge the discrimination ruling by failing to respond to earlier case filings.

A ruling from the administrative law judge who heard the case Friday is not expected for months.

Mr. Gunn said his daughter lives with her mother but often visits him and had gone swimming in the pool on Memorial Day weekend in 2011. He said Ms. Hein sent him a text message shortly afterward, accusing his daughter of clouding the pool and saying she would have to shower before entering it and wear a shower cap. A few days after that, Mr. Gunn said he went to the pool and saw the iron sign stating “Public Swimming Pool, White Only.”

Mr. Gunn said he was so angry his hands were shaking.

“It’s something you’re supposed to see in history books,” Mr. Gunn said. “It’s not something you’re supposed to see posted at the building where you live.”

He determined he had to move to protect his daughter and was not about to let her see the sign or risk having Ms. Hein upset her.

“I did not want her to think that there were people like this or have her think that just because she wasn’t white, people would think less of her,” he told the administrative law judge.

Mr. Gunn also testified that he incurred costs from moving, lost work time and higher rent in addition to the emotional stress, but said his primary concern was his daughter.

“She shouldn’t have to think about the color of her skin in relation to what people think about her,” he said.

Elizabeth Brown, executive director of Housing Opportunities Made Equal, also testified – mostly about the impact on the racially diverse community. The nonprofit fair housing agency in Cincinnati helped Gunn file his complaint.

“It’s not just a personal issue,” Ms. Brown said. “Cincinnati has had problems in the past and has worked hard to change its image into a welcoming and inclusive city. An outrageous action like this is another hit on the city’s reputation.”

Cincinnati was the scene of race riots in April 2001 when police and demonstrators clashed following the shooting of a black suspect by police.

Civil Rights Section Chief Lori Anthony with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office told the judge that damages are being sought “to send a clear message that racial discrimination in housing will not be tolerated.”

The judge did not indicate when she would rule.

Disagree with the sign - there's a difference between a private business and an apartment complex. Apartment complex can refuse to rent to people they don't like - but they can't treat those who do rent with them differently from any other.

Generally speaking, this would be considered a violation of freedom of association, not speech. The speech involved is incidental; it's evidence of intent to discriminate in housing.

These laws are relics of the American Civil Rights Movement. At one point in American history racial discrimination was so thoroughly embedded in parts of American society that it really was a good idea to abridge some pretty basic freedoms to get rid of it. If those laws were introduced today they would deserve much more skepticism.

I bet if you surveyed the local urban ghetto you'd find a lot of Democrats. If you go to wealthy suburbs, you find Republicans. Staten Island is Republican. Loudoun County, Virginia, the wealthiest county in the country, is Republican.

People with bachelor's degrees and below tend to be conservative. People with postgraduate degrees, which are mostly useless (think MrFun's master's in history), tend to be Democrats. Possibly because they've been stuck in the ivory tower of academia.

I'm trying to hunt down the gallup polls that directly address this but this fact shows up in his approval numbers: people with bachelor's degrees are no more likely to support Obama than people with only a high school diploma. The education group with the least support for Obama is among people with some college but no bachelor's degree.
