How does this happen? Chick-fil-A branded as anti-gay?

Hell, even Starbucks has some decent sandwiches now; Panera, Chipotle, Steak 'n' Shake, a sub shop... if CFA is the best fast food you've got, maybe Columbus isn't the post-apocalyptic hellscape I've always thought it was."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine

Why? It's insignificant except to Chik-fil-A's bottom line. They were donating money to such-and-such? Doesn't matter, since everybody's already made up their minds on the issue and conservatives have effectively lost the fight. Nor, I think, is Mr. Cathy silly enough to cave after the lesson of Susan Komen. But he has no reason to cave, because his business is unlikely to be hurt by all this. And, at any rate, I believe his convictions are sincere--he's giving up a fair amount of money by staying closed on Sundays. He'll continue spending his money however, and after a few months enthusiasm on both sides will die down. Then some people will go back to CFA because they like the food, while others give it up because they just wanted to be on the ramparts for traditional marriage and/or ****-the-liberals. We'll have forgotten about it by this time next year.Originally posted by Wezil View PostIt won't be up there with the Cuban missile crisis, but yes, historical social movements/progress is documented by just this sort of event.

Under normal circumstances, sure. We're talking about today, and Huckabee's little pet project, and how it COMPLETELY ****ED UP MY DAY, THANKS SO MUCH MIKE, I THOUGHT YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BE THE GUY WHO WAS ALL ABOUT PHYSICAL FITNESS AND WEIGHT LOSS, WHY ARE YOU SENDING PEOPLE TO GET FRIED CHICKEN MOTHER****ER?Originally posted by regexcellent View PostUnder ordinary circumstances people don't go to Chik-Fil-A to express solidarity with the owner. They go there for a goddamn chicken sandwich. Ideology is irrelevant here."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine

Bingo on the last bit. Also, as I noted, the supporters have a ****load of kids, and I imagine they'll keep eating, and bringing the kids, for at least as long as dissenters balk at it. We'd have to have access to their ledgers to know for sure, but I imagine it'll all balance out in the end, or come out slightly in their favor.Originally posted by Guynemer View PostOne day of a whole ****ton of business won't offset a whole ****ton of people never eating there... assuming, of course, all the self-important PC folks protesting the place ever are there in the first place.
I wasn't even thinking of Panera--I guess I tend to mentally class them differently, because they're cutesy and don't have that whole craphole fast-food atmosphere. I suppose they're better, yeah. Sometimes I'm just in a CFA mood, though; I've never had a dry sandwich. I think I only ate at Chipotle once, down in Florida. It was fine, IIRC. We don't have Steak 'n' Shakes that I know of.Originally posted by Guynemer View PostHell, even Starbucks has some decent sandwiches now; Panera, Chipotle, Steak 'n' Shake, a sub shop... if CFA is the best fast food you've got, maybe Columbus isn't the post-apocalyptic hellscape I've always thought it was.
That paragraph was horribly disjointed.

I was wondering how old you were when I was reading the preamble then I got to the end comment.Originally posted by Elok View Post{preamble}... We'll have forgotten about it by this time next year.
I said history, not current events.
Some day when gay marriage is accepted and legal across the US and the story of the struggle is told, it will be pointed out the huge number of Americans that came out and supported the corporation that inserted itself into the debate on the wrong side. This isn't some sort of watershed incident but it will be significant."I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure." - Clarence Darrow

Not necessarily. The future is not pre-determined. When Sharia Law spreads through Europe, the US, and Canada, the audacity that some people supported the affront against God known as homosexuality will be shocking in retrospect. But fortunately, we have brave holy warriors like Ben Kenobi to stem the tide of both Islam and sinful secularism.Originally posted by Wezil View PostI was wondering how old you were when I was reading the preamble then I got to the end comment.

That could be an alternate possibility.
I defy Elok to prove either of us wrong (particularly me since I'm old and decrepit already).

I think we're setting different thresholds for significance here. I'm sure it'll make a footnote somewhere, but generally only specialized historians know the names of companies involved in civil rights battles back in the sixties. And those were actual fights--sometimes involving riots--not somebody discovering that somebody else supports something and a brief hissy-fit erupting across the internet, culminating in a hiccup in sales.Originally posted by Wezil View PostSome day when gay marriage is accepted and legal across the US and the story of the struggle is told, it will be pointed out the huge number of Americans that came out and supported the corporation that inserted itself into the debate on the wrong side.
