If this is true, Britain has a very tenuous relationship with free speech.Originally posted by kentonio View Postmany prominent Republicans would have been charged with hate crimes for the nasty hate mongering crap they spout about muslims.
Regarding the NHS funding, remember the Royal Navy? I seem to recall it used to be a thing. Does it still exist? If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

That's a coincidence, I'm proud to be British. The idea of it being enshrined in law that people can picket funerals brandishing hate signs sickens me.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View Post♩ Proud to be an American... ♩

I find it relieving, knowing that I'll never be locked up for an opinion that other people find absurd (such as opposing abortion, thinking that we shouldn't have socialized medicine or believing that god doesn't existOriginally posted by kentonio View PostThat's a coincidence, I'm proud to be British. The US has the most expansive free speech protection on Earth, and that's a fact. The only serious restriction on political dialogue we do have is campaign finance reformOriginally posted by kentonio View PostHint: Real life isn't black and white.
Second hint: You don't have unlimited free speech either.
And if you honestly think that government can be trusted to distinguish between reasonable and unreasonable political expression, you should probably retake history. If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

That's funny considering you wouldn't be locked up for expressing any of those opinions here either.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostI find it relieving, knowing that I'll never be locked up for an opinion that other people find absurd (such as opposing abortion, thinking that we shouldn't have socialized medicine or believing that god doesn't exist

Given the way opposing gay marriage is "homophobic and bigoted", something that is still a majority opinion in many quarters if not most, it sure seems right over the horizon in Euroland.Originally posted by kentonio View PostThat's funny considering you wouldn't be locked up for expressing any of those opinions here either. If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

People are perfectly welcome to argue against gay marriage here if they chose, equally we have the freedom to call those people homophobic bigots when they do. What they don't have a right to do however is incite hatred towards homosexuals. As a rule, that seems perfectly ok to me.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostGiven the way opposing gay marriage is "homophobic and bigoted", it sure seems right over the horizon in Euroland.
*EDIT - Posted before your edit.
The most recent polls show 71% of British people are in favour of gay marriage. US polls show more approve than disapprove. Where were you talking about a majority?Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View Postsomething that is still a majority opinion in many quarters if not most
