They were teaching slavish adherence to the law and they were following the law - but their hearts weren't fully involved in loving God.

Jesus added a number of things to the law - but the Pharisees were following the law as written, but not its spirit.

No Jesus took particular issue with the way they followed the law and didn't follow the law. The biggest issue was with there disobedience regarding the Sabbath Year.
