Then I don't see why you should be expected to live up to Catholic teachings.
.
Why Ben what would your Catholic teachings tell you in the scenario. Your wife has borne you a child or two and then something scary happens medically and you get told that an additional pregnancy would be very dangerous ( ie carrying a pregnancy to term would more likley than not kill her. Do you abstain for the rest of your life or would you get a vasectomy or use other birth control?
Obviously I don't follow Catholic teachings ... What would they tell you to do?

I'm not Catholic, obviously, but you'd think contraception would fit in with their general doctrine on reproduction in that case--much like they accept abortions to save the mother's life.

Well, it depends on the diagnosis. We'd get a second opinion through referrals from Catholic friends of mine before making a decision. Most doctors don't agree with us on these issues, so I'd rather get the opinion of a doctor that we trusted on this particular issue. I love my present doctor (he's a wonderful man), but on something this important we'd want to know precisely what is going on.
I'd go so far as to get the correct diagnosis of her condition and the actual chances. Many times doctors warn about things that aren't necessarily so.
If it were a case where conception would pose a threat to her life, we'd practice periodic abstinence per the Billing's Ovulation Method.
It requires no surgery, just being diligent over time. Plus if her condition improved, we could go back without having to undo surgery.

They only accept an abortion as in the case of an ectopic pregnancy where we, at present, cannot save the life of the unborn child, but you can save the life of the mother.
If the child is far enough along to survive outside the womb - C Sections will be done to save the life of the mother and the child. If complications arise, they will usually wait to delivery early via c-section.

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
Just for the record. are you claiming that the Billing's Ovulation Method is 100% successful and that every pregnancy resulting from following this method was user error?

Did I say that in my post? No? Then I suppose you have your answer.
Would I trust it with the life of my wife? Absolutely. Isn't science wonderful?

Your answer demonstrates quite a mistrust of doctors and some bigotry as well in that referrals for a doc would come only from your Catholic friends.
But I understand that you think docs are too conservative with respect to risk to their patient and that may have validity. But there are many many conditions that make getting pregnant EXTREMELY dangerous

Ben I am 44-- I have no intention of changing my mind. I was quite certain that I wanted no more children before I made this decision. Even if Mrs Flubber died tomorrow and my next wife was 15 years younger, there would be no way my views will change.

I've had the same doctor for close to 20 years now. It's just the difference between a GP and a specialist. I would want to take her to a specialist for a second opinion before we did anything. And yes, I would want it to come from a Catholic who understood the issues. I have Catholic friends whom, if they didn't know someone who could help me, would refer me to someone. I would rather spend some extra time doing due diligence before we make a decision that will affect both of our lives to that degree. Best to make a decision with all the evidence at hand, than to panic and rush.
But there are many many conditions that make getting pregnant EXTREMELY dangerous
And I can quote for you at length some of those complications. I'm aware of that, and at present, there are a few conditions that make getting and staying pregnant more difficult, but they can be worked around. Your scenario of pregnancy as a 'death sentence', just doesn't bear up with the real world. There are always risks, and risks can be adequately managed if they are known ahead of time. I know personally, some friends who have worked through similar issues, and this was their solution.
and when she got pregnant you would allow her to die rather than abort??
Neither, I'd take a third option and do what I can to save the life of both my child and my wife.

Flubber, I'm not trying to convince you. I'm simply answering your question to the best of my ability.

It wouldn't be Ben's decision to make. In fact the notion of Ben telling her "I want sex but no contraceptives whatsoever even though pregnancy has a substantial risk of killing you" is absurd.
Would I trust it with the life of my wife? Absolutely. Isn't science wonderful
That, to me, is the coldest statement I've ever heard.
Maybe when you find a girl, fall in love and get married, you'll change your opinion.
I would never risk my wife's live when there are ways to avoid it that provided better odds. Even if they were illegal. My wife's life is worth more to me.
For you to choose religious beliefs over the life of your spouse demonstrates how little you will value your spouse. Which is not surprising considering how little the church values women.
