Most humans will never be faced with a "close the hatch" scenario. I don't know if you're making this argument, but the death penalty is not analogous. Time is largely not an issue as it concerns death penalty cases, whereas time is the issue when you must "close the hatch."

I was addressing the more general concept that sometimes hard choices must be made to save more lives.

Let's see, both states continued the execution process even after they were presented with proof positive that the main was not guilty? Georgia went ahead after several delays so they at least played lip service to not wanting to murder an innocent man before killing an innocent man.

What about the shell casings present at the scene? They matched casings found at the scene of another man he shot -- and there is no doubt that he shot that man.

You are making the entirely unproven assumption that the death penalty does not deter crime. As it has not been proven in either direction, my stance on the death penalty is that I don't know whether it is right or wrong. It all depends on whether it is effective or not. If you are correct and it is ineffective then of course I believe we should abolish it, but only because it isn't useful. Not for moral reasons.

If you don't know whether it does, why do you support it?

Any rational person would not support killing people if you did not have incontrovertible proof that it'd help society.
